Ok. I know we shouldn't give up are 2017 first but there are some players that could make giving it up. For example Nathan Mackinnon is a Rfa. If we were to sign him it would cost us a 1st 2nd and 3rd ( if he was signed to a 6 or 7 year 6-7 mill per year. ) Before you say you wouldn't do this think about it. Nathan is a former 1st overall and Is amazing. He's probably worth all that at least. We could easily clear enough cap space to make this work. We would need to get r 2nd back from the ducks but we could easily get it back
Then sign jimmy vesey
Trade jvr for a top 2 d. Maybe trouba Barrie or hampus lindholm.

Leafs now have their goalie of the future and with Mathews and the rest of their forward prospects they have a great future there. However they do need more high level defence. With a lot of centres and a good back up goalie in Bernier could help in that area

Get a grip people. neither Van city or Calgary does these deals and it's not even close. you can't keep shining up garbage and expecting gild coins in return. No I don't Mathews. at least not by himself. if I'm Calgary or Vancouver I would rather take Dubois. 8 years younger will be cheap labor for the next 7 years and he's got a high ceiling and is said to have one of the best all around games.

Your giving away too much. JVR is worth the goalie and pick alone. JVR has delivered every year.
Half of the top ten in any year have been mediocre at best.
Every team will want JVR, but they will try to low ball Toronto as they have in the past. But we have a better management team now.

There are better deals to be had at the draft table 3-7, 8, and 10
Your deal could be one of them, but the Leafs should work their way downward picking up extra picks.
The preference is to do a deal with 3-6 to leverage Edmonton who will likely try to do a deal for a defenceman by swapping picks with Arizona for 7th + extra.
There is a whole realm of opportunities with various scenarios that work well with the Leafs trading JVR.

Although the trade is not terrible, just don't see why the Leafs would trade a top LW for a C prospect when they will be drafting Matthews and hopefully signing Stamkos. The Leafs will already have to move out Bozak and Holland to make the players fit. Good player, wrong fit for Toronto.
