I want to ask you guys how do you make the PENS a contender? They have drafted from late in to the first round sometimes second or third round. This year they have the 10 th oversell pick with ex Leaf WES CLARK. He really needs to hit a gland Slam .
Forget about Marner for a minute but which NHL team needs Marner more than anyone Pittsburgh 2025-26 will be Dubas 3 rd season. MARNER would be crazy to sign because as soon as Crosby Malkin Latang and Karlsson are done.All that's going to left in Pittsburgh is Marner
If Dubas wants Marner and greedy Marner wants that 8 th year when he is 36 Dubas has to send Leafs a decent asset . RUST is really there only tradeable asset.

So if I'm in charge of Leafs I'm signing Marchand give him more term for lower cap hit

There is, of course, the minor consideration that Marner will choose where he goes, not the Leafs.
If Marner was to choose the Penguins, which is highly unlikely, why would Pens give up Rust, their 3rd highest goal scorer (31), when they can simply sign Marner to a 7 year contract on July 1st?
I would like to see the Leafs offer Marchand a $7 x 3 year or $6 x 4 year deal to become the team’s heart and soul.
Marchand May be 37 but he is epitomizes everything the Leafs need and are searching for.
It would appear that Bennett, with his Conn Smythe level performance in the SCFs, has completely priced himself out of dLeafs budget.
Paying Bennett $10 million a year for 7 years until he is 36 would be a huge mistake considering his physical style of play does not tend to age well.
Ekblad’s will also command in the $10 x 7 year range and has an extensive injury history.
Terrific player but ….

I think Marner wants to hook up with Pittsburgh. The Pens can't afford both Marner and Rust. It goes a ways to replacing Marner 100 points and Rust only makes $5.1 million.

That. $10 million contract of Karlsson is killing the Penguins . The only real way they become an instant playoff team is bringing in a top tier player. Marner enjoyed playing with Crosby and enjoyed playing under Dubas. It gives Marner the 8 th year. This will be the last big contract Marner signs. He may sign another contract but it’s not going to be for $13 million or whatever he signs for.
To sign Marner they will have to shed salary and it’s not Karlsson Crosby Malkin or Latang that’s already $26 million. If they sign Marner it pushes cap close to $40 million. The cap next season is $95.5 million this would be a worse cap problem than Toronto has been facing the last few years. The Leafs need to be a 3 line scoring Team. The Pens select 10th overall they have never bottomed out so Marner better be aware that when Crosby Malken and Letang retire there is nothing left. Dubas had high draft picks in Toronto the Pens 2024 drafted 44th overall 2023 drafted 14th overall 2022 drafted 21 overall 2021 they drafted 58 th 2020 they drafted 52 overall 2019 they drafted 21 overall.
Dubas is in a world of hurt if he couldn’t win in Toronto how is he going to win in Pittsburgh this year they have the 10th overall pick. There are no franchise players @ 10th overall unless you get extremely lucky. No Team needs Marner more than Pittsburgh Dubas will lose his job if he doesn’t hit home runs in free agency. He has nothing from the Penguins drafting.

I don't Mariner wants to leave the LEAFS this year he might settle for a $11mil/ maybe $10Mil short term deal (1 or 2 yrs) . I think he realizes he is this close to the cup and the LEAFS only need a few impactful supporting pieces (where the discount would help) . This discount would go a long way plus with a new young family who would really want such a major change. I think achieving his dream for the cup in Toronto has more value (tangible and sentimental) than the $$$ at this stage of the game, plus having the cup + point on the resume goes a long way
. For the Rust deal the LEAFS could do Kampf, Jamkrok and a pick +? .

I think Bennett is a stronger asset than Verhaeghe both have the same in points 2025 playoffs but Bennett brings more with his physical abilities. If Bennett can’t go around a player he will just hammer the player that stands in his way.

Interesting statement considering you seem to be the only person who feels the Penguins are in the running for Marner’s services.
I doubt very much that Marner wants to commit the next 7 years of his life to a franchise destined to become far worse before they begin the turnaround in their rebuild.
Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Karlsson are all aging.
Of the 4, only Crosby is aging well.
Does this look like the kind of future Marner would choose when he will have multiple teams to choose from?
I would imagine Marner will either choose a team that is close to competing for the Cup like Carolina Hurricane or LA Kings, or a young, upcoming team like San Jose, Anaheim, Chicago or even Utah who are loaded with talented youth and are only a catalyst away from breaking out as a contender.
I think Pittsburgh Penguins would be at the top of Marner’s “No Trade List”, if he had one!

This could end up being bad for Marner if he was trying to put a gun to the Leafs head. The chances of Leafs beating Florida in this next series may be lower than the Panthers to win this next series.
If the Panthers win the Leafs are going to be forced to make a huge change to the roster and that would mean moving on from Marner.
If Florida win I'm sure the Leafs let Marner walk and with his money they sign two other players in his place the players they would sign number 1 would be Sam Bennett and the other would be Matt Duchene
Those two players would cost Toronto $12 million combined . With Duchene Who is 34 years old and had 82 points in regular season there is some risk as he only had 3 points in the 2025 first round series vs Colorado.
We should also remember when Sam Bennett left Calgary he almost had no value as he only put up 36,26,26,27,12 and 12 points in the 6 years in Calgary the first four seasons he didn't miss many games the last two seasons he only played 52 and 38 games .
So there is tremendous risk with both these players and every year Marner will put up 100 points . Also many of the goals that Bennett scores are garbage goals knocking in pucks just outside of the goal crease. The element that Bennett does bring is he is very physical with Duchene you would add extra year or two to knock down his cap hit .
I would offer Bennett 8 years @ $7 million and Duchene 5 years @ $5 million. It would almost be a guarantee that these two players together would outscore Marner but the physical play of Bennett would change the make up of the Leafs where as Duchene would be the better point producer of the two. Both of these players natural position is Center ice.
So if Florida take down the Leafs Marner is gone and for certain the first player they target is Bennett and Duchene would give Leafs a shorter term player who offers Leafs more cap flexibility

The problem for Robertson is the rising cap will make players like him obsolete these two players needs a fresh start STEEVES & ROBERTSON.
When the cap hits $113 million the Leafs will benefit more than most but it's essential they sign Tavares to a team friendly deal and sign MARNER and KNIES to 8 year deals
This would have all top 6 forwards signed to long term deals except MATTHEWS
MARNER $14 million x 8 years
MATTHEWS $13.25million
NYLANDER $11.5 million
KNIES $9 million x 8 years
TAVARES $6 million 5 years
These contracts look great in 3 years and in new cap world you just have to deal with Matthews

Knies was a steal for sure. What about Hughes, Guenther, Power for example? Beniers and McTavish have been quite good. Can't look past the fact that Knies gets to play with Matthews and/ or Marner a lot. A lot of other guys on the draft board don't have that kind of talent around them.

You definitely have a weird way of giving players a shout out. Knies has become what this team has lacked for years. But what about McBobby? Guy has sighed a 1.35M X 2 contract and is on pace to almost hit 30 goals. What a steal this guy is. I don’t even think Bobby knew he’d take off like this. Made Tre look smart but I think he got lucky. This guy keeps up this pace or close to and the salary cap going up, he is gonna be in the neighborhood of a 5-7M dollar player per year. Enjoy this while we can at 1.35M another reason why Marner can walk is so we can keep guys like Bobby!

@Clarky He's really flying under the radar for sure. He also hasn't had the benefit of an entire season with Mathews and Marner. He was in fact demoted at times, and even left off the team out of camp. Mcmann definitely has heart as well.
