If Fehr is not taken in the expansion, let Boyle go and make Fehr the 4th centerman. Sign RD Michael Stone. Resign JVR to a one year extension for now. Resign Polak and McElhinney.

JVR/Bozak/Marner
Hyman/Matthews/Nylander
Brown/Kadri/Kapanen
Martin/Fehr/Komarov

Rielly/Stone
Gardiner/Zaitsev
Dermott or Nielson/Polak
Borgman

Andersen
McElhinney

Michael Stone is happy in Calgary and the Flames want him back.

Many of the trades proposed here involve players that the Opposing Team does NOT want to trade - it has to work for Both sides.

Boyle is UFA - free to sign anywhere he wants to, Toronto does not have control over him - In saying this, I do agree with you that Fehr "may" work as our 4'th line C but don't think he is as fast anymore as what Boyle is.

Good thoughts - Not trying to shoot you down just stating facts about Stone and Boyle.

Why would JVR sign for only one year? Either way we'll find out July 1st.

Gauthier is 21 6 5 215 lbs already really good at face offs huge body and you want to trade him.

Let's look evidence why you don't ditch young players

Alex steen leafs gave up on him then he turned stud getting old now but gave blues a lot

Kadri was always getting shipped now he may win Selke and put up 35 goals

Gardiner. The whipping boy but now he can be top pairing defenceman in emergency or great second pairing guy

Don't trade promise and gauthier has lots.

Carolina trades

Faulk
Stempniak

Toronto trades

Nielsen

Komarov
Michalek
Corrado
Laich
Kapanen
2017 2nd
2017 3rd

Toronto gets top defender and forward depth, Bozak makes instant impact at centre for Carolina, as well as forward depth with Michalek, and Laich plus two picks and top prospect

Chewvacca51

1.) 11 Jan 2017 22:27:24
Should say Bozak instead of Komarov, man I'm a mess

2.) 12 Jan 2017 00:52:21
Carolina would want waaay more

3.) 12 Jan 2017 01:51:42
Leafs don't have a 2017 3rd. I think this the third trade in the last couple of weeks where a non-existent pick is traded.

4.) 12 Jan 2017 03:53:08
No reason to give away Nielson

5.) 13 Jan 2017 00:42:54
Toronto GM

Well if you want a top 2 young stud like Faulk you can't be greedy but in this trade leafs have to add

6.) 13 Jan 2017 02:10:13
You can't just dump spare parts for a number 1 D. If Leafs ask for Faulk, Canes guaranteed to ask for Nylander. Don't know who hangs up faster

The leafs will have a busy offseason especially with the expansion draft. Ideally, this is what I believe should happen.

1.) Boyle does not necessarily have to be resigned. Many people are forgetting the leafs have Eric Fehr. According to multiple sources, Vegas will most likely take Leivo or Rychel come time the expansion draft roles around, leaving Fehr exposed. Eric Fehr has played big roles in the past and although was not the greatest this last year with the pens, he can definitely crack the leafs' lineup as a 4th line centre. With that, the winger positions can rotate accordingly with Martin, Kapanen, Soshnikov, potentially Leipsic, and Leivo if he is not taken.

2.) Prospects Jeremy Brocco and Adam Brooks should be given the chance to play in the minors this year. Both have put up outstanding numbers and I can see each making NHL debuts by the 2018-19 season, with a slight possibility of a debut this upcoming season. This would of course depend on how the team is doing and injuries.

3.) The defensive situation is looking a bit better for the leafs, as they just signed Calle Rosen and Andreas Borgman. Both have put up great points as young defensemen in pro leagues. I believe the leafs have signed these two defenders instead of signing two or three current NHL defenders. Now, this doesn't mean no one else is signed - I still believe the leafs will sign someone like Shattenkirk or Alzner to get that top D. But by the 2018-19 season, at least one of these two promising young defensemen will be playing with the leafs.

4.) Finally, the leafs should attempt to trade Leivo. Although he has very few games played, he has put up great numbers in those games, and he should bring in some trade value. This will, however, affect my first point, because if Leivo is out or the picture, Fehr could be viewed as a draft candidate. I do hope Leivo is able to stay with the organization, I do believe he is a great player with huge potential.

5.) This final point is just something extra to make you leaf fans happy, I heard from an individual who is friends with an NHL source and apparently Shattenkirk is really considering Toronto as a new home, due to location. The other candidate I heard was the Rangers.

I can see a lineup like this by the time the season opener roles around

Shattenkirk/Reilly
Gardiner/Zaitsev
Carrick

6th and 7th defender would be two of Borgman, Rosen and Polak

JVR/Bozak/Marner
Nylander/Matthews/Hyman
Komarov/Kadri/Brown
Martin/Fehr/Kapanen
Extra: Soshnikov/Gauthier/Leipsic

Andersen
McElhinney

Please also remember that lots can change, and it most likely will. This is what I would think to be one of the most reasonable outcomes.

Agree with all except the last. Shattenkirk will go to the east coast. NYR has to clear cap space for him (probably Nash) .

The Devils have tons of cap space. Boston would have to move someone.

The Islanders don't need him. Washington can't afford him.

I don't think Lou will take on 7M long term, when he will have to hand out a fortune to the 3 rooks in a couple of years.

When you can concentrate on signing and drafting RHD from this point forward (We currently have only Zaitsev and Carrick as young RHD depth) ; we will load up on the RHS before the season starts.

Lou can start with an ELC for Darren Raddysh; then try to snag players prior to the expansion draft; then draft RHD as best he can; and when done all that; look for a short term RHD free agent like Stone for 2 years while all the new additions develop. He's already packed up the LHD.

The Leafs are still 2-3 years away from contending, so why waste it on Shattenkirk. There is only so much cap space to go around, and I doubt the overall cap is going to rise much. The Leafs will need to plan out how they distribute the cap space.

We don't want the Hawks model, we want the Preds model.

17 May 2017 00:38:12
Why does everyone want to trade Carrick? Carrick will be a great defensemen, he is still young. I believe he will be a top 2 defender on any team within 5 years

Chewvacca51

1.) 19 May 2017 00:33:29
Expansion draft. He will be picked off by Vegas. Like everyone else; get what you can, or you lose him for nothing.

The kids got heart and improved dramatically from a horrible start.

But we need a 2nd pair RHD. He will be the casualty.

Or:

Lou can try and make a deal with Vegas now, the basically follows the line of:

We will leave unprotected player A and trade you player/ pick B for pick C. Vegas will be bound by this deal during the draft.

This way the Leafs can later make the deal for several Dmen and only lose what they agreed to previously.

Just what player Vegas will accept as the unprotected will decide whether the deal goes ahead or not.

2.) 21 May 2017 19:30:07
Leafs are protecting 7 F and 3 D. They protect JVR, Komarov, Kadri, Brown, Bozak, Martin, and Leivo or Leipsic. They protect Rielly, Gards and Carrick - Zaitsev is exempt! No reason to not protect Carrick!

The leafs really need a top two defender if they want to have a shot at the playoffs. Forward addition could be considered as well. They're off to a much better start, and the tanking phase of finishing bottom 5 in the league is over - the team is really ready to compete. The phase of trading away top players for draft picks is over as well, the leafs have more than enough. I'm not discuss specific trade proposals and ideas, I'm bad at those, so instead of that I will share some ideal targets and assets.

The Islanders have some decent defensemen, but none that would be suitable as a top two defender. However, trading for a defenseman would definitely add depth. I see Johnny Boychuk as a decent candidate, mostly because he's a defensive defensemen and part of the defensive issue this year is high goals against. Adding Boychuck wouldn't entirely rid the problem, but it would contribute to help fixing it. Calvin De Haan or Travis Hamonic are also potential targets to obtain. Contacting the Islanders would be ideal for the Leafs. The Islanders are struggling offensively, so offering some forward aid in exchange for defenders would be smart. Regarding forwards from the Islanders, rumours have surfaced of a potential signing between the Leafs and Johnathan Tavares. I have chosen to leave this topic out of trade talks because he would be obtained through off-season signing, and unlikely through trade. If the Islanders continue on the losing path, they could find themselves tanking for the remainder of the season and possibly trading away top assets for draft picks and prospects. The Leafs, a team who's young players have really started to make a difference can use their deep prospect and draft pick pool to their advantage and acquire impacting players.

The Arizona Coyotes could be another potential trade partner to consider. Offering a trade for Oliver Ekman-Larsson would be helpful to the Leafs. Ekman-Larsson is capable to be the leafs number one defensemen, let alone a top player in the organization. However, this would come with a heavy cost, and he would only be able to be obtained by giving someone or some players of just as high or higher value. To add, Arizona is also going through a rebuild and has a foundation player in Ekmam-Larsson, making a trade unlikely. A player that would be easier to pursue would be Alex Goligoski, who would definitely fit into the team as a top 4 defender. Although Goligoski is not as good as O. E. L, he would also come at a smaller price and still provide for the team. I could see a bottom 4 defensemen, a mid to high ranked prospect, and a draft pick to Arizona for Goligoski, but a multi-player type trade for Ekman Larsson.

Other defensive targets the Leafs could pursue include Kevin Shattinkirk, Tyson Barrie or Cam Fowler. These players are capable at being a top 3 defensemen at the least, and would contribute to the team without doubt. With them comes a larger price, but that would be ok depending on what assets the Leafs could give up.

Overall, the offensive core doesn't seem to be too much of a problem, but could definitely use improvement. Some players they could pursue that would make an instant impact could be Tomas Hertl, Alex Killorn, Jimmy Hayes, Teuvo Teravainen, or Darren Helm. Small acquisitions such as these don't necessarily give the leafs a franchise player, but they do improve the lineup and add depth. The reality is that not all prospects will make the team, let alone amount to anything, and players will eventually leave the team through free agency or get traded for players in other positions, thus opening up spots in the lineup. These players are somewhat flexible to play on the wing, and some can play at centre. Remember that these are just suggestions - not needs. There are many other players with the same skill level as these that could be acquired.

The Leafs previous seasons tanking will ultimately become beneficial when it comes to trading. The Leafs may not have much to offer in NHL ready players, but they have a boatload of draft picks and prospects. We can assume that Kadri, Reilly, Matthews, Marner and Nylander are keepers for sure. Van Riemsdyk, Bozak, Zaitsev, Gardiner, Komarov, Hyman, Martin, and Brown will most likely be kept, but a trade is never out of the question, obviously depending on the situation. That leaves the assets. Players like Nikita Soshnikov, Brendan Leipsic, Kasperi Kapanen, Rinat Valiev and Fredrick Gauthier have some NHL experience and are top Leafs prospects. JJ Piccinich and Jeremy Bracco are still young in the OHL, but have had an excellent start to their seasons. Milan Michalek, Matt Hunwick, Martin Marincin, Peter Holland, Connor Carrick and Roman Polak are all NHL ready, but would not have as high trade value. With the listed players, a long list of draft picks, and an even longer list of prospects, the Leafs should target teams with those needs. As mentioned before, acquiring a number one defender like Ekman-Larsson would cost top players from the organization.

Before I close, just remember that when you consider trades, think. To obtain a something good, you have to give away something good. Sometimes this good you have to give away might be a bit more than you get in return, but if it would be reasonable in the long term, go for it.

The leafs are not trading JVR for picks. Enough of that, the phase of trading away good players for high picks is over. They have plenty of prospects to work with.

See this makes sense for the Sabres especially since the team isn't going anywhere anytime soon but Ristolainen is fairly young and I also think is apart of their future plan. The values there but I think the Sabres won't get rid of him.
