Preds will keep Subban, Josi, and Ekholm.

So prior to the expn. draft, I expect them to move Ellis.

Ellis is a puck mover with good offense and is reasonable defensively. He's cheap at 2.5M/yr and is a better option for the Leafs than Shattenkirk for the 2nd pair.

He's not worth JVR who represents a rental only for them.

Maybe:

TOR: Leo(F), Bracco(RW), 2018 2nd SJ.

NSH: Ellis(RHD), Trenin(LC)

Trenin will be a 2nd line center at best but more likely a 3rd line center. He's got a great pair of hands and can score as well.

I didn't think it was that bad actually. the only thing is the Leafs would lose Carrick in this, but the Preds have Josi, Subban and either Ekholm or Ellis. So to trade Ellis they could go the 7-3-1 route, as it stands now they have to go 4-4-1 and risk losing Watson, Jarnkrok or Smith or something else they like. With this move they could protect

Johansen, Neal, Forsberg, Smith, Arvidsson, Fisher, Watson.
Subban, Josi, Ekholm
Rinne
Either way the Preds are losing something, and the trade gives them Leo to be exposed and may not lose Jarnkrok or Siddons because of it. It's a gamble but because of the situation the Preds are in, they may consider it. Think about what they're potentially giving up with 4-4-1.

@ Puck It and NHL 98

It's called the expansion draft. Try the calculator on CF for the Preds and you'll see they can't protect Ellis. Maybe you would like them to trade Josi or Subban instead?

The Preds will protect Subban, Josi, and Ekholm; their top 3 Dmen.

This leaves Ellis to be traded or lost for nothing.

We trade Leo who can play any forward position for them, Bracco, who has no place to go on the Leafs, and a 2018 2nd.

We get back a quality RHD and a C/ LW who is gifted offensively.

The Preds would be nuts to let Ellis go to Vegas for nothing.

@ Chewy
We might or might not lose Carrick. It depends on whether Lou can make a deal with Vegas. He should be able to make a deal because Vegas will have little to gain otherwise from the Leafs. Teams like Chicago, Nashville, Anaheim and more are at the mercy of Vegas and it makes no sense to make a deal with those teams.

The other way to look at that issue is what who would you rather have as you 2nd pair RHD. Carrick or Ellis. And you still may not lose Carrick anyway.

And on top of that you can still use Carrick in another trade. At some point the Leafs will be able to minimize their losses.
