Just a thought in a hypothetical scenario but if the Leafs win the draft lottery I think that depending on who else wins a trade makes more sense.
Tor- #1
Whoever- #3 + top prospect
The reason being that McKenna will be great but the Leafs already have offence and need Verhoeff. Teams like Vancouver and Calgary desperately need offence and won't draft Verhoeff because Vancouver had Buuim and Calgary has Parekh.
Wondering what everyone else thinks of this? The only team that throws a wrench in this plan is Chicago because they already have a top guy in Frondell to play with Bedard but are lacking that #1 dman.

@VanCreamdyk
I think your scenario is what most want if the Leafs somehow win the lottery. As for Chicago, they have a lot of young talent on their blueline and would without a doubt take McKenna or Stenberg at 1 same goes for Vancouver and or Calgary.
I would say the only wrench would be coming from the Leafs themselves are the creative and or smart enough to do something like this.

This team is hard to watch and I don't think anyone would be surprised if they went nuclear.
Tor- Matthews
Min- Boldy, Faber, Wallstead
It's clearly been known that the Wild want a number 1 center and Toronto gets a premium piece at each position. Toronto might need to add a bit but Matthews has value.
Then we look at who else is struggling.
Tor- Nylander, Stolarz
NJ- Hamilton, Silayev, pick OR Hamilton, Nemec
NJ dumps Hamilton's salary and adds a premium offensive piece. They also get a goaltender that can help as Markstrom has struggled. Toronto gets a big dman and a big dman prospect.
We know OEL, McMann are getting traded for picks/prospects.
I doubt Tavares wants to move but Montreal needs a center and isn't far from his hometown.
Tor-Tavares, Laughton 50% retained, Hilldeby
Mon-Hage, Reinbacher, Zharovsky
Montreal gets 2 centers and trades good prospects that they don't need on their roster. If Stolarz isn't required in the previous trade then he could go into this trade instead.
Buy out Reilly or try to trade him at 50% retained.
Try and trade everyone not named below at the draft.
Players for next season
Offence
Boldy, Knies, Maccelli, Joshua, Cowan, Hage, Zharovsky and a bunch of kids
Defence
McCabe-Faber
Hamilton-Tavev
Reinbacher-Silayev
Goalie
Woll
Wallstead
Leafs build from the back end out. Pray for a top 5 pick this year and when offence becomes available next year try to add it and finally fire Berube and Treiliving.
1.) 05 Mar 2026 14:52:51
Yikes. Nope.
2.) 05 Mar 2026 15:22:05
Wow that’s bad. No thank you.
17 Feb 2026 22:07:53
Leafs need trade to bring in assets to make bigger trades.
Final targets should be Werenski and Wallsteadt.
Laughton to anyone for 1st + lower pick/ prospect
Reilly for 2nd + prospect (Can take back salary in this deal)
McMann sounds like he might fetch a 1st
Carlo for 1st
Stolarz for highest asset
OEL for highest asset
Jarnkrok for anything
Leafs trade most of these assets gained + Cowan for Werenski
Leafs trade another 1st, Roy, Danford, Hilldeby for Wallsteadt
Leafs build around Matthews, Nylander, Knies, werenski, Wallsteadt and return to playoffs next year
Next year
Knies-Matthews-Domi
Maccelli-Tavares-Nylander
Blank-Blank-Robertson
Lorentz-Blank-Blank
Werenski-Tanev
McCabe-Blank
Blank-Stetcher
Wallsteadt
Woll
Holes to fill but this roster can be dangerous and there is cap space available.
1.) 18 Feb 2026 00:25:54
Insanity.
2.) 18 Feb 2026 12:24:22
If Maccelli and Domi are still on the team and playing in the top 6 then we will miss the playoffs next year too! Maccelli has a qualifying offer of around $4 million so no thanks he can walk if not traded!
3.) 18 Feb 2026 20:04:28
So you do all this then hope to sign 4 new forwards yet to be determined along with 2 defensemen yet to be determined and possibly 3 defensemen if Tanev doesn't bounce back from possible career ending situation. Also throw in that you got rid of Stolarz and Hildeby who both Joeseph Wolll gets along with and you bring in Wallsteadt who looks like he could be a good one but that is based on a small sample of 28 career games in the NHL. And you are giving up in that single trade for goalie with those 28 games, Roy, Hildeby who is just coming into his own and 1st round pick as well as Danford who was a 1st round pick. Then what happens if Woll says. Hey if you are in full rebuild and you see me as a backup then trade me. Then you have a unproven goalie with no backup plan .
4.) 19 Feb 2026 01:38:03
You gave up 10 roster players and 1 1st rd prospect (Danford) all to get 2 players ???? who’s going to play the rest of the season? You are truly ?????.
5.) 19 Feb 2026 20:53:43
I don’t get your values a 3rd 4th liner for 1st
And Reilly only gets a 2nd he’s a top pair on this team 2nd pairing on any other team lol but still doesn’t make sense to me.
20 Dec 2025 05:33:51
Tor - Matthews
NJ - Nemec, Silayev, Palat, Another cap dump of their choice, 1st 2026
NJ missed on hughes but still has the assets to make a matthews deal work. Toronto rebuilds from the blue line out.
Tor - Nylander, Stolarz
Mon - Fowler, Reinbacher, Beck, Hage, 2026 1st, Laine
Toronto trades stars now for a bunch of prospects and takes Laine to make salary work.
Hopefully leafs can sell off guys like OEL, Mcmann, Reilly and others to tank for the rest of the year to retain their pick which is top 5 protected.
Build around this new young core and hopefully turn things around in 2-3 years
1.) 20 Dec 2025 10:47:00
Not gonna dump on the trade I think your getting decent value but I do not this the leafs would have any reason to trade willy in division.
2.) 22 Dec 2025 12:01:18
Leafs get screwed in Habs deal. Laine? Really?
02 Jun 2025 19:50:28
Tor- Cowan
Buf- Peterka
Peterka wants out which hurts his value and Cowan is at the top of his value right now. Tor gets their 2nd line center and buf gets a good young player
Tor- 2nd 2027, prospect
NYR- Krieder
NYR get out from under krieders contract and toronto takes on a risk that could have huge benefit
Sign Tavares, knies, Lorentz
Knies-Matthews Domi
Krieder-Peterka-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Steeves
Lorentz-Laughton-Holmberg
Reilly-Carlo
McCabe-Tanev
Benoit-OEL
Stolarz
Woll
Lots of money left there to upgrade the bottom 6 offence.
1.) 02 Jun 2025 21:04:42
People please stop putting Domi in the top 6. He has to go…. huge liability. He’s been given chances all throughout the lineup and he doesn’t provide anything. Literally trade him for whatever you can get.
2.) 03 Jun 2025 03:13:03
Domi needs to be traded, bought out or put on waivers not put on the 1st line!
A huge NO to the already 34 year old, Krieder with two more years at $6.5 million, whom Rangers are more than anxious to dispose of.
I would definitely consider trading Cowan for Peterka for three reasons:
1) Peterka is still young and developing at only 23
2) Peterka can step into the Leafs lineup while Cowan is probably still a year away.
3) though he is a left handed shot, Peterka plays right wing and can help fill the void that will be left when Marner departs.
Knies - Matthews - Peterka.

Leafs claim zykov from Edmonton temporary help while Ennis and hymen are out
1.) 29 Dec 2018 03:56:10
Heck ya. Zykov really looks like he has potential. Real shame to see him getting bounced around so much. Leading scorer in the AHL last year, he never really got a chance at NHL level yet. Leafs could do a lot worse than pick him up. I’m surprised Edmonton waived him so soon considering how desperate they need depth and secondary scoring. He’ll likely be reclaimed by Carolina though.
11 Nov 2018 00:57:52
Anaheim isn't doing all that well and might be looking to rebuild sooner than later.
Tor- 2019 1st, Bracco, Gardiner
Ana- Manson
This is an overpayment by the leafs but we get the player that we need.
Then
Ari-Hjarmalsson
Tor- Timashov, Korshkov, 2020 2nd
Don't know Hjarmalsson's value but I feel like that could be close.
1.) 13 Nov 2018 14:06:47
Its not an overpayment because you've really only traded a latr first round pick and Bracco for one of their too D-Man. Gardiner doesn't count because they don't need and won't be able to afford him anyway.
10 Jun 2018 17:18:48
Hymen-matthews-nylander
Marleau-kadri-marner
Brown-free agent-kapanen
Grundstrum-aaltonen-johnsson
Reilly-trade
Dermott-zaitsev
Rosen-hainsey
Andersen
Sparks
Promote the first line of the Marlies to the 4th line and keep the chemistry together.
Promote sparks to backup so we don't lose him for nothing.
Need a center and a defenseman. Main trade bait would be Gardiner and our first. I think we should package those two pieces together for the best defensive defenseman available for that price.
For third line center sign Stastny. Nash would be a good second option. Would be great for Tavares but he would get paid much better elsewhere.
My question to you guys is what would 50 point Gardiner and our 1st bring back on the right side of Reilly
18 May 2018 03:17:03
Tor- 2018 2nd, 2019 2nd
LV- Miller
Tor- Nylander, 25th overall
Mon- 3rd overall, 2nd 2018
Tor- Signs John Carlson, Paul Stasny
Tor- Gardiner, McElhinney
Anyone for highest pick available
Hymen-Matthews-Kapenen
Marleau-Kadri-Marner
Johnsson-Stasny-Brown
Grundstrum-Lindholm-Bracco
Reilly-Carlson
Dermott-Miller
Borgman-Hainsey
Andersen
Sparks
Draft a good winger at 3rd overall that could hopefully fill Marleau's shoes when he leaves.
Both Sparks and Pickard would need to clear waivers to go to the AHL next year so whoever you don't pick as your backup should have his rights traded for another pick.
08 Feb 2018 08:03:57
Does anyone think that the leafs could swing a trade to upgrade at center. In particular Bozak. What do you guys think Bozak and both 2nd round picks would fetch on the market.
31 May 2024 14:17:12
I agree that this isn't a great dcore but it isn't terrible. Lybushkin played very well with reilly and if synergy is there between 2 players then it doesn't really matter what space in the lineup he's projected to be. If the leafs can swing tkachuk out of ottawa you do it he's unreal. There are some potential d targets in free agency such as zadorov but the leafs would have to move out more cap.
23 Jan 2021 09:21:02
Great minds think alike lol.
13 May 2020 00:36:48
That is a terrible trade for toronto.
01 Feb 2020 00:54:45
Hertl is out for the season.
19 Jul 2019 18:28:54
Only problem with Brodie is he is left handed and only signed for this year. I doubt the leafs give up marner for a rental on d.
10 May 2024 19:25:07
I honestly think the leafs are waiting on Berube to see if they can pry Rod out of Carolina. If Carolina gets swept for a 2nd straight year in the playoffs he could be available. If it's not Rod I put my money on Berube.
12 Jan 2018 03:29:14
Leafs are at the 50 contract limit and would have to make a trade in order to free up a contract spot to claim him.
