I like dotchin on the leafs but he won't be able to sign until all legal preceedings regarding the termination of his contract are sorted out. Both him and his agent do not agree with the circumstances on which the contract was terminated. Once the NHL has determined that this was withi the right of tampa bay then he will be free to sign elsewhere.

Also, I don't know how many times one person can suggest signing Chris Stewart. He does not fit in with this team.

I don't agree with your comment about Stewart. I wish the Leafs would have at least offered a PTO. He is big and has better skill than most give him credit for. Don't use him as a goon, but as a physical presence on the fore check. The Leafs do not need a fighter, but size with skill would be a plus for the Leafs.

Assuming no major trades or free agent signings, I expect the roster for 2019 to remain virtually identical to the team starting this year. Only the defense will see major change, with Gardiner and Hainsey out, and Liljegren and Ozhiganov/ Carrick in. Possibly a free agent signing of some sort to shore third line.

I don’t particularly know how I feel about Sandin making the team after only a year of development in AHL. I suppose that depends on Sandin more than anything.

We can get a rental if we need one I suppose. But of the top four, it’s not difficult to see Zaitsev is the weakest link. Leafs can keep Zaitsev for the next six years. That’s plenty of time to draft and develop RHD replacement. Or we can bring in short term plugs to shore up right hand side if either Liljegren or Zaitsev hiccups.

The team with the best prospect pool by far is Tampa. They have made some incredibly astute trades of late, and Yzermam has to be acknowledged as one of the smartest GM’s in the league right now. They will be competitive for the net decade.

Leafs should model themselves after Tampa, and make some low risk/ high reward trades, bringing in highly rated prospects in exchange for pending UFA’s or aging players that are still useful but expensive (Kadri, Gardiner, Reilly for example) . Our prospect pool is thin, and no matter what web site reviews you read, the only prospect Leafs have in Top 100 is Liljegren.

Win now is great and all, but I’d like to win again later too.

Doing that just sets us back. We can’t go intoa season with JT as our only vet, and the entire locker room being kids. Naz doesn't deserve to be traded and neither does Mo. This isn’t like NHL18 where we can simply trade an ‘85 overall’ 26 year old for a ‘79 overall’ 20 year old, knowing that he’ll grow. We need to keep a stable team together, with a blend of kids and vets and middle-aged players. And these kids (Heiskanen, Makar, etc. ) aren’t guaranteed to ‘grow’ as per se, and it would be more ideal for Toronto to not just go after them. And even if they did ‘grow’, remember, they’ll take 3-4 years to get to the current potential of Naz/ Mo. And, these guys ain’t like JVR/ Gardiner or Bozak, they aren't UFAs. They’re under control for the next three years. And I don’t know how you can at all call them expensive. They (Mo/ Naz) are on two of the best contracts of the league. Mamy people rank them, as well as Fredy, as top20 best bargains.

We ain’t revuilding anymore. This core is still young. Until 2024-2025 this team should be competitive. I couldn't care less if they win two cups within that frame and after that are left with bloated contracts, an old core and a team that is on the brink. What we need is to win. We can’t keep prolonging and saying ‘oh, one day, we willwin’. No. This team is ready. Obviously, we don't need to trade multiple firsts and deplete our prospect pool further, but acquire some cheap rentals (Kempny to WSH is a perfect example of a low risk move paying dividents), and maybe one more dman, and we’re set. No need to shoot oursleves in the foot now to upgrade the ‘prospects’ or the ‘pick pool’. We can't be in a rebuild forecer. Good teams don't have excellent prospect pools. Eventually, the prospects in these pools graduate, and they are the ones that take over the team; thus rendering the prospect pool weak. But who cares? If the team is strong, and is young enough, what's there to lose? No need for a good ‘pool’. A good YOUNG team is what's needed. And when this team ages after its won a couple of cups (hopefully), who cares what happens? We’ll be happy, the core will be happy. that's how PIT fans are now; they know whenthey sighed Johnson he didn't deserve five years. But if he helps this core for the next three years and then falls off a cliff, its fine, because after thise three years, Pittsburgh will be older and not as good.
