Sitting Benoit in his hometown for soft pushover liljegren I get he’s a rh shot but come on. Even Brodie. I just don’t get how you take Benoit out of the lineup. In a 7 game playoff battle/ war who would you rather have out there. Soft Timothy or Brodie or Benoit?
like the deadline pick ups nothing flashy but did address some needs not all but some.

It seems like they want Lily in there. Mostly because he is a righty I would think. That and they want 3 Dmen they think can move the puck well. They have Rielly and McCabe. After that I think they feel Lily moves it better than Brodie, Edmundson, Benoit and Boosh. Problem is, Lily is too slow to read plays and not good in tight quarters. He has some stretches of better play, but always reverts back to what he has always been. I don't mind him as a 5/ 6, but Benoit has simply outplayed him this year and brings that physical presence that Lily can't bring. Although 5 lefties on D isn't great obviously.

I agree that Lili has been very inconsistent and sometimes shows poor decision making.
But I see Edmundson, Benoit, Lyubushkin and McCabe all doing what Brodie does, as well or maybe even better BUT with physicality.
Brodie should have been traded last year. He’s simply regressed to the point of being effective. Surprised Keefe keeps him in the lineup.
I know others feel differently and that’s fine. Just my view.

The problem with peoples opinion on Brodie that he has regressed so bad that he isn't as effective as Liljegren isn't even backed statistically.
All numbers below at even strength. Brodie has played 18 more games to take into account.
Brodie plays more minutes and tougher minutes than Liljegren. Brodie is a +13 while Lily is only a +2 playing softer minutes. For instance, Brodie starts 53% in the D-zone while Lily starts 59% in the O-zone. As a matter of fact, Brodie has the highest even strength + ratio of all Leafs D-men. Takeaway to giveaway ratio favours Brodie. Brodie 136 blocks to Liljegren's 95. Lily leads in hits 65-34. Although Brodie starts in his own end more playing tougher competition, his total shots against are 96 while Liljegren's are 116 playing softer competition. The team has allowed 20 more shots against with Lily on the ice in 18 less games than Brodie. Could go on, but I will stop there because Lily doesn't lead in many categories and when he does, it's minimal.
I am not thrilled with Brodie's play this year either, but Lily has been extremely disappointing. I can't imagine someone saying he is outplaying Brodie. Just my opinion, but I think it is more that Brodie was at a higher level than now and the higher level is expected, so lets play Lily instead even though he has been worse than a diminished Brodie.

Its a question for me of Liligren EVER making the Top4. It took him lots of time in the AHL so I’m hesitant at the NHL.
At this point his upside is preferred to what Brodie gives and I’m giving him a chance.
Brodie is known at this point and the Leafs probably don’t get by the Bruins with either of them unless a key Bruin or two is injured and the Leafs play their best.

Fair enough.
Personally, I will stick by my opinion I have had of Lily for a long time. #4 at best, but more likely a #5 if he pans out. Right now he is barely a #5/ 6, so I would lean to the more experienced player that I know what he can do and he may be able to turn the clock back a bit for a cup run. Not keen on playing Lily and hoping Lily finally reaches potential that I never thought he had.

Leafs had a couple of mental break downs and didn’t play as much as a desperation game as the bruins they will win the game Thursday in Boston and you guys will all be double wristing them. The boys have won 9 of the past 11 settle down ya goofs!

I made the same comment when VGK beat them after their seven game winning streak.
The Leafs are truly an enigma, able to play an absolute stinker from time to time.
And last night was it!
Too many spectators. Put in an effort by winning races for loose pucks instead of showing no urgency.
And I agree this is NOT the year but I have to ask when?

What we saw imo, was a forward group that did not fully buy into the defensive side of the game like they did when they were on the win streak. Then Keefe keeps mixing up the D-pairs all game didn't help. I am not saying the D was good, but we know they aren't great and need help from the forwards.
Until Nylander, Marner, Knies especially and even JT buy in completely, they aren't going to look good unless they outscore teams.
For example, you can see it in every defensive decision Willy makes. Even when he does the right thing, there is an instinctive move to go on offence first and then you can actually see him try and correct it. Not trying to pick on Willy, it is just he is the most obvious about it and he is the worst offender even with effort towards defence.
With Marner it is different. He is in position, but tries to make some unnecessarily fancy play when it isn't always needed. He does it to try and create offence even 6' from his own goal line. He seems to get excited when he pulls off his cute plays.
JT tries to anticipate and do too much sometimes in what looks like an attempt to dominate a shift and get his team going. He picks the wrong times to do this sometimes. Again, even in his own end when not needed or under pressure.
Knies is just careless with his stick and clutching and grabbing etc. He works hard. He uses the body. He is a good talent, but he makes over zealous mistakes.
Then there is the opposite in guys like McMann, Kampf, Bertuzzi and Holmberg for instance. They are almost always on the right side of the puck. McMann finishes his checks more than anyone. Kampf and Holmberg not far behind McMann in that aspect. Bertuzzi battles all the time defensively and offensively.
Why can some do it and some not? My opinion, with the first 3 named, it is simply selfishness. What those players care most about is what they enjoy to do, over what the team needs them to do. With JT, I think it is trying to lead by having a dominate shift, but that is when he makes a mistake sometimes.
With the group I mentioned that play a solid team defensive game, the personal desire is not being overtaken by, the what is right to do desire. They are unselfish players. You guys have heard me say that about McMann for a long time. It is why I thought he could play in the top 6-9. Not only does he have a harder shot than I think most knew about, he is unselfish. He is fine doing the dirty work, laying the body, driving the net, battling in front of the net etc. He is not concerned with fancy play or driving his personal stats or persona. He wants to win and will do what it takes to do so as a team. The others could learn from guys like McMann, Bert, Kampf and Holmberg.

First thing first, I don't think anything is gunna even start to change until there is a different coach fire this goof Keefe.
Tre needs to do something get a couple forwards that bring heart and play there D!Ck's off and that are defensively responsible I don't care what you trade at this point to make it happen.
Then go get a couple freaks on the back end to add to Benoit besides reilly this guy has been the most steady and just plays a solid game.
I don't know what tre is doing but he better put down the popcorn and pick up his phone!

I am with you on a lot of this. Except I do care what they trade to acquire it. I think the Leafs need to keep their assets unless they are getting guys with term and not too old.

Need a change fire keefe and hire craig berube. Get rid of one of marner or Willy for a dman and then go get a guy like Jacob Middleton. This is getting brutal to watch no effort no accountability for core 4.

Robertson is not a top line player imo. I posted the same lineup earlier with McMann and Robertson switched. I'd rather a big body with that is not always looking to have the puck with Matthews and Nylander. Robertson wants the puck and so does Matthews and Nylander. One puck, can't have 3 guys on the same line that always want it.

You know why these are not the line is because defensively they are terrible combinations domi has been great but the one thing you will notice is keefe shelters him a lot Robertson has been fine this year but unless there’s injuries there’s no need to put him up in the top six.

I like the trade pick ups and I agree with the line combos. McMann on the top line getting the big boys the puck and I agree with domi on the 2nd line in a more offensive roll with Jonny T for defensive zone draws. 4 lines that won’t be pushed around.

Clarky I agree with your line combinations I think teams would have a hard time matching up with those 4 solid lines. More I think of this Willy signing the more mad I get tho. Imagine that money on 3 players.
