Sign Campbell

8 years @ 1 million per year with a 4.5 perfermance bonus every year if he plays 1 game

That way 4.5 cap hit isn't counted until year after he meets performance and Dubas has extra year to worry about mrazak.

Campbell still gets full NMC so playing 1 game will always happen. Year after his contract is done will suck cap wise but that's 9 years from now so who cares. If other teams can be shady about terminating guys to play in khl or sign guys half way through year with no cap oenelties or sit 9.5 million dollar hits until playoffs to be cap compliant and play with 100 million roster in playoffs why not the leafs

Do something magical to give the finger to the league Dubas, it's time to flex leaf dollars

Lol. Not a bad idea.

Should have done the same with MNM+JT and just stacked a team for the first year.

Mrazek and Engvall to Arizona for wedgewood
and Beagle and 2022 2nd(lowest of the 4/5)

Arizona has no goaltending in the pipeline. Don't know why they dealt Hill but they did and Toronto can benefit. With 2 Chez goalies waiting but not ready mrazek can mentor and be the guarenteed #1 guy here. He has a 10 no trade to team clause so leafs ask for list if Arizona not on it great. If they are on it oh well worth a shot.

If it works Arizona gets a possible goalie to settle games down better than the goalies they have. Engvall is younger and still RFA if qualified at 1.25.

Leafs save 1.175 or so this year but more important 3.8 next 2 years to try to resign Campbell.

Beagle is s faceoff wiz that can be a 4th line role player. Wedgewood simply is s crappy insurance on Campbell but this is about the future with Campbell.

Yes u all want crouse for Ritchie here and it might work if Ritchie wasn't owed 3.3 million next year. One of the many reasons the guy is a leaf still and will be for his remainder of contract unless they buy him out which will cost the leafs

3.3 salary/bonuses remaining at time of buyout divided by 2/3 =2.2/2= 1.1 per 2022-23 and 2023/24 seasons so it is possible. Or they could bury him for cap hit 2.5-1.25= 1.25. So again another possibility. Either way he is hard to even just give away and crouse is now making a case to be a 3rd line power forward on contending team or just stay and resign with rebuilding Arizona as a top 6 forward. Don't see Arizona just handing him over now. Too late

Anyways that's my first trade of new year hope you enjoyed the read

Let's finish the night with a marner trade now

Let's annoy Kane with his comparison

To tor
Kubalik
Murphy
Connelly
Nylander
Reichel

To chi
Marner
Holl

I mean Murphy improves the D. Kubalik as he isn't marner could work just fine with Matthews. Connelly is cap dump to make this work as Shaw LTIR makes them cap compliant once Johnson returns. Reichel closes the skill gap and nylander just because

Marner gives Chicago another Kane type if Kane bails on them after next season. Holl replaced Murphy roster spot.

Big change might work for both teams might not but leafs get better D and cap management with this trade while still might hit jackpot with reichel.

A lot would depend on how the Leafs spend the new cap space.

Panarin and Kreider rejoin strome while nylander joins Kakko and zibanajad

Tavares gets a playmaker now.

Don't know why but lefreniere with new yorks forward skill mix just isn't working. Is it possible Nylander in New York is the right fit for him much like it was for daddy Nylander.

Leafs May need to add but only due to the fact the guy they are getting went#1. Well
to debate thst so did Daigle and so did yakapov and unfortunetly for New York lefreniere is lookin closer to them than
a RNH right now.

Worst case lefreniere doesn't work out but leafs have 6 million now to build depth this and next year while he is an RFA still.
Best case is he clicks with either Matthews or Tavares in big way plus that 6 million I mentioned above. Hey why not?

Laf is not tearing it up by any means. He needs to play with a finisher and he is not doing that in NY. Could he be the perfect LW for Matthews and Marner? maybe. Totally agree that Nylander should have more value right now, but we probably add because Laf was a 1st overall pick.

Question

How is it Rask signs a $1 million deal but his cap hit is $1 million

Thought if player signs after regular season starts his salary owed that year gets pro rated to the date he signed

He signed for $1 million. salary on January 11th which means his actual prorated cap hit is closer to $2 million

I mean nylanders first year was pro rated to reflect his little joke out why doesn't Rask and boston get sane treatment

Anyone??

JdB1394

1.) 14 Jan 2022 21:08:45
I have actually been wondering this myself.

Nylanders hit that first year was close to 11 mil if I recall.

2.) 15 Jan 2022 00:29:49
I think it has to do with the date he signed on. Isn't there something to do with signing before around December 15th to get pro-rated for the whole season?

3.) 15 Jan 2022 17:32:02
@RLF if Nylander didn't sign before the 15th he wasn't allowed to play. So it seems a bit off to me regardless. Couldn't Dubas ask Spezza to sit out until January then give him league min?

4.) 15 Jan 2022 21:06:20
Sorry LL. It does have to do with when he signed. The later he signs, the cap hit can be higher than at the start of the season for UFA's. Capfriendly gives the calculation to use.

5.) 15 Jan 2022 22:21:56
@RLF that's what I thought. That's why it's so confusing in the Rask situation.

6.) 16 Jan 2022 22:31:13
I meant, sorry LL, but Rask cap hit does have to do with when he signed. My guess is that it is to precent teams from keeping a player sidelined all season and then sign him at the end and have it pro-rated.

Kadri
3yrs 4.5 per= 13.5 million
135 gms 42g 70a 112 pts +11
12g 35p 483 pp minutes
26 sh minutes
66% off zone F/O start
120 hits 33 blocks 52 TK 61 GV

Kerfoot
4yrs 3.5 per= 14 million
154 gms 23g 52a 75pts +19
1g 4a 129 pp minutes
167 sh minutes
55% def zone F/O start
111 hits 94 blocks 60 TK 77 GV

So kadri has half a year to add to these stats while if not traded Kerfoot has half a year plus next year to add to stats.

Obviously kadri provides offence and kerfoot defence.

Throw on Barries 39 pts and offence wise the deal is pretty close. So, for what Toronto needed then and still needs now I think in the end this deal wasn't all that bad at all. Yes 1 big year by kadri makes everyone mock the deal but in the end for 1 extra year of Kerfoot and a chance at getting a top pairing RD I think it was worth the risk.
So the D risk went sour but can't achieve glory without some failure along the way.

JdB1394

1.) 10 Jan 2022 01:05:04
I agree the deal was fair but barrie was not the guy the leafs needed and they found that out quite quickly kerfoot has become better every year since being here and I’ve really enjoyed his game this year…. But if I was the gm and I could re do all that I would of never signed jt and kept kadri and built a more well rounded team with all that money.

2.) 10 Jan 2022 06:24:01
Problems with the deal came down to position and Barrie being one of the most overrated D I have ever seen before he came to Toronto.

Kadri can play 3C and Kerfoot can't. In the current lineup I don't even have an issue with Kerfoot over Kadri as long as someone else can play 3C.

3.) 11 Jan 2022 14:04:23
Leafs got Barrie at 50% retention, so all in all the value was probably reasonable. I just didn't like the deal because I didn't think Barrie was what the Leafs needed out of a trade for Kadri. Personally, I think Kerfoot is who Dubas coveted higher than Barrie. He thought he could be a cheaper 3C than Kadri and played a game that Dubas liked at the time. Now Dubas has realized that Kerfoot is not a 3C and we need more Kadri type of gritty players and not just speedy guys (better able to control themselves than Naz though) . Kerfoot is also one of the most likely players to be traded if Dubas wants to re-sign Campbell.
To me the deal was a loss because Dubas traded our best asset for two players that did not solve the Leafs needs.

4.) 11 Jan 2022 16:33:00
He also tried to do a deal for brodie and jankowski first, but kadri used his m-ntc to turn that one down.

So Dubas went with a trade he could make.

Also those saying they wouldn’t have signed JT
I was on this site when JT got signed, everyone was ecstatic, I don’t think there was a single naysayer at that point, looking back is JT worth 11? Probably not, but at the time it seemed like it would pay off in spaids.

21 Nov 2021 19:31:56
Is he bored? Is he unhappy/depressed? Does he just not like the team around him? Has he become a borderline alcoholic? Is he still hurt? Or does he just not give a rats butt right now? Is he mad McDavid/Draisiatl
Are clearly more dominant than him when last year he closed that gap nicely? Does he miss playing only Canadian teams due to their less concern on defence?

I don't know the answers but somethings off with Matthews.

Is it time to cut the cord and make a statement trade that No one is untouchable. Telling the team that if you don't do what we pay you for we have to let you go

If Dubas wants to change his 4 core with a dman philosophy and trade the highest paid player for stronger top 6 depth and future depth it might just be the time to do so.

Any thoughts on this matter or am I still just speaking out my butt?

Please let me know

JdB1394

1.) 21 Nov 2021 19:38:01
I’ve been saying for years he gets disinterested, this is just a really long spell of it.

2.) 21 Nov 2021 21:45:59
We all saw this from Mathews countless times under Babs. This one looks different though. Especially because last year he was so dominant.

He just came out this year like he doesn't care.

3.) 21 Nov 2021 22:19:41
His bags under his eyes tells me another story as well. He looks tired meaning one of 3 things usually

Drinking
Smoking
Late night gaming

Maybe even all 3

But hey I’m no doctor.

4.) 21 Nov 2021 23:17:16
Drinking and drug use is far more common with professional athletes than most realize so I wouldn't be surprised.

Give a 21 year old a cheque for 10 million+ and it doesn't always work out well for some.

5.) 22 Nov 2021 01:13:23
Throw on his best friend is a pop star and recipe for disaster.

6.) 22 Nov 2021 07:36:28
Ahem gaudreau, looks like he finally figured out his right dose of blow.

7.) 22 Nov 2021 13:18:10
He has always had bags under his eyes, even at 18.lol
That said, there is something missing.
Is he just taking more time than anyone expected to get into game shape? Is the commitment by the team to be a better defensive team just not suiting him? Is he concentrating on defence so much, that it is affecting his offence?

8.) 23 Nov 2021 17:39:26
I honestly think his wrist might still be screwed.

9.) 24 Nov 2021 04:33:39
I think you’d guys are reaching a bit by saying he is abusing drugs and alcohol I think it’s more due to the fact that he is coming off wrist surgery which we all agree should of been handled sooner I think the other factor is keefe keeps changing his line mates hard to build chemistry when you only get 3 games with a line I don’t think it’s wise to trade a franchise player I mean his lowest goal total is 34 he will find his game he just needs to get back to using his lethal wrist shot and stop taking so many one timers.

10.) 24 Nov 2021 07:40:35
@Leafs1994 the lack of effort is more what strikes me as an external issue than wrist issue.

His shot hasn't looked bad lately but he's playing like Kessel if that makes any sense. The guys that we all know at work that shows up for a cheque and nothing else. The guy that thinks the world owes him something.

Don't forget, he was caught drunk in Arizona a few years ago.

More of these guys than you think have substance abuse problems ruin otherwise lucrative careers.

20 Nov 2021 23:50:45
Garbage reffing tonight. Guess I can hack Matthews whenever and put sticks between legs of marner and trip him but heaven forbid Rielly is stronger with stick than McGinn but oh they'd s penalty

Gonna be a long night of crap

Matthews looks hung over.

JdB1394

1.) 21 Nov 2021 02:50:14
Reffing wasn't great but man did they look like they had a group outing at a strip club last night. What a bad effort.

2.) 21 Nov 2021 19:25:24
Won’t get any better as islanders are on big losing skid and we all know the leafs are every players or teams recipe to get out of slumps. Haven’t scored in a few week fear not the leafs will help. Gavin bad luck in net play the leafs you will appear to be the best goalie around. Your team just can’t get the calls or bounces no need to worry Toronto will help u out.

Since the Dubas era leafs seem to win vs better than them competition but Lose to lesser opponents or slumping teams.

Don’t expect anything differently tonight then off yo Cali
They go.

3.) 21 Nov 2021 23:19:03
I'm expecting Will to get blasted tonight.

I'm thinking Kaskisuo.

08 Nov 2021 13:38:08
Looks like by bringing up Semyonov and Anderson and putting mrazek on lTIR is indication of a trade in the talks right now.

Why bring up Anderson only to lose him in a month on waivers

Semyonov is waived exempt so guess this is his tryout

JdB1394

1.) 08 Nov 2021 16:27:57
Engvall? Only roster player I could see being moved.

2.) 09 Nov 2021 00:36:11
Engvall or Kerfoot+ one of Holl/ Dermott probably get moved before Mrazek comes back.

I see where your going with this though, no reason to have Anderson at all if your not planning a trade.

So r u having leafs pick up some of Ritchie’s cap
If so that means the same 1.125 cap retain has to be used next year as well

If that is your deal then a rental Dman and goalie for 3 non rental players with 1 having a retain attached to it probably doesn’t need draft picks attached to the deal

Philly at this point might just do the deal and on leafs end it might be a pretty good deal to save leafs 6.925 in cap for next season and able to replacing the 3 roster spots next year with cheap contracts or ELC contracts for less than 3 million
Opens up close to 4 million plus Campbell’s 1.65 million to resign Campbell and keep leafs very competitive in short term with ristolainen

All other trades as Skinny stated no thnx.

Yes leafs get better but Buffalo cares about future more so this deal makes sense on both ends.

Arizona is already eating OEL and kuemper contracts so can only eat 1 more this year

Plus having to pay 1.3m in back taxes I’m pretty sure they won’t want to just pay part of another players salary to have him go elsewhere at this moment in time. If anything they will try to trade for players worth less than their cap hit to recapture some of that 1.3 million lost.

Just cheat like the islanders did with komarov and pay player to agree to leave and khl to take player contract all behind nhl back then put player on waivers to terminate contract . Easy escape from getting out of nhl contract

1 yr 10 million to player
1 yr 3 million to khl

13 million total to get rid of player not against cap and just make sure nhl turns blind eye like they did for Lou and Leo

Easy lol.

First off crouse plays 2 minutes a game on the PK
When he is on PK for a faceoff he starts 97.9% of the time in DZone meaning he is on top unit for his team. So sayinv he doesn’t kill penelties is big lack of research on your part.

Crouse hits close to 3 opponents a game and when he is out on a faceoff for a game he starts 60+% of those in the DZone meaning he is trusted by his coach.

Last game he got 2g 2a playing with Larson as his center. The coach put Kessel with them for regular shifts but put moser with them after a PP instead of Kessel and whenever a DZone faceoff was being taken by them. It worked out great for all 4 guys but not so much for team in and 8-7 SO loss. Crouse +2 in game not bad defensively.

Throughout his career crouse has never been the play driver. He does not do so well when coaches put him in that spot. However when put with offensive skilled players although not that quick he takes smart routes to keep up with faster skilled players and creates space while having great JVR like hands thus putting up points and complimenting the skill guys.

Yes he can't drive his own line . Many coaches have tried and failed. Crouse needs better skill around him, he plays to his line mates not line mates play off him. If his line mates are skilled he seems to fit in. If his linemates suck he plays at their level.

I think getting crouse would be a smart move. Put him with Tavares so he will excell. When in the DZone for faceoffs put kerfoot with the 2. When I. The Ozone for a faceoff put nylander with them. Have him PK with kerfoot and it might just work out.

Bottom line Crouse isn’t another Ritchie. Ritchie is offence first one demensional. Meaning if he doesn’t get any offence going he can’t do much more. while crouse is defence first one dimensional meaning if he can’t get his defensive game going he best be off the ice. Ritchie is much more dominant offensively when at his best than crouse so his defensive liabilities gets covered up. Crouse May never have the upside offensively than Ritchie but at least when crouse isn’t putting up numbers he plays steady defence. Crouse worst is still nhl level while Ritchie might not make your local beer league team at his worst. Oh and crouse plays hard even if he isn’t getting top minutes while Ritchie seems to just slug it up just filling space if he doesn’t get top 6 minutes. Leafs should try to take crouse if Arizona will hand him over.
