I think it's safe to cross Dallas off the possible Phaneuf destinations after they signed Oduya yesterday.
Which begs the question, where in the world can Dion end up?
Edmonton (doubtful), L.A (maybe - let's hope), Anaheim (prob not after Kelser took them to the bank yesterday), Buffalo (who thinks Dion would 'allow' a trade to Buffalo. I don't)
Any other ideas?

By all accounts right now it looks as though Toronto will not be trading for a top four dman. Patience is the key now for one to become available. I hope they try and possible move a guy like jvr at the deadline to grab one. The teams prospect pool is becoming envious but the holes in goal and on defence are emphasized because the forward pool is growing at such a huge rate. I am all for trying to mo e jvr out for d and or picks at the deadline but they really do have to have a focus on defence now. With the exception of the obvious, there may be some other dmen available right now for trade but what about simply signing a guy like carle for a year? He could be added to bl and mm group of guys that will be dealt away at the deadline. I'm happy they are continuing this rebuild the right way, stashing guys overseas and letting the kids develop. This needs to continue or the team will fall back to where they were before.

Nielsen and Dermott are 1 year in the AHL away from the pros. Valiev and Loov can serve as callups for the time being.
No rush to find the 4th. D. Goal is taken care of. Center is taken care of. Left wing seems to be pretty good and better if they sign Vessey.
Right wing is the area of concern when your best winger is Marner. Maybe we can get him an iron man suit. I am a huge fan of Marner, but he's a stick. Sosh is great for the 3rd line. But who is the top right winger? All the rest of the right wingers are all rook's.
So that's what we need to trade for, is a quality RW for the 1st line. Linberg, Kappenen, and Brown are great for the 3rd and 4th lines to start, but who for the top line.
So trade for a RW. About 25 or less, large, fast and aggresive and can make a pass.
There you have it, go help Lou figure it out. Find a RW.

The Leafs should trade JVR and Khadri at the trade deadline as that is when teams will cough up better draft picks and prospects. The Leafs are still 3/4 years away from being a top team if some of their young players develop as planed and I don't think JVR and Khadri will be in the teams long term plans.

lab16 Nylander will be our top right winger by years end. Marner could be number 2. Sosh like you said can play 3rd line and then there's Hyman who did a great job last year.
Marner may or may not be there so if he isn't you always have Michalek or Lupul as guys who can fill in for a top 6 role depending on the leafs plan for those guys.

I'm not a huge fan of Nylander, a one dimensional smurf, who runs from contact, doesn't fore-check all that well, coasts after a broken play, and took a vacation when his team needed him the most in the playoffs. I see lots of development required for him.
So I do hope your right about Nylander, but I just can't see it yet, too many flaws.
Sosh will be perfect for the 3rd line.
How about Martin-Komarov-and Sosh.
All hitters, aggressive, irritating styles of play, good speed, and have talent as well. Those guys alone would be worth going to see; if I didn't have to mug a scalper around here to get tickets.

In few years time, Marner might be the best Leaf period. Amazing skill set with and without the puck. I hope he can translate that to the NHL level quickly.
But we still need a power RW. Michalek, Laich and Lupul should be gone as soon as possible, and unfortunately Greening.
Maybe Linberg or Brown is ready for a shot.
Lou does have the room to obtain two quality forwards who will be protected without risking anything but a minor leaguer before the expansion draft. And that's because other teams will not be able to protect everyone, especially quality 3rd year prospects whom they would rather trade than risk losing them for nothing.

I'm by no means saying Nylander will be a great all around player but he will be a offensive force on the ice with his speed and shot. Hopefully he can be more than what kessel was and work out to be able to battle in the dirty areas. I don't think he fears the corners like Kessel did but needs to learn to win battles in other ways than skill.

I'm just hoping he has his father's drive, and he also might end up a little bigger. In that regard he will do better than Kessel in the corners. Kessel all but killed JVR's effectiveness for a number of reasons.
But other than that, I see Nylander as trade bait while he's still attractive to other teams. Maybe Buffalo.
We drafted a lot of large promising players this year; most of them older. If even 1/4 of them (close to the NHL avg. success rate) the they will push out most of the smurfs very soon. But definitely not Marner or Sosh, and hopefully not Nylander, but time will tell. All three need to bulk up, strengthen, and increase their speed.

smid and hiller are worth way less than bernier (more indicitive of how poor both flames are). should be hiller, smid and a 4th for bernier. maybe bernier for smid, hiller and a second
