Martinez is a good player for sure. Not exactly the youngest guy in the league. I find it a little ironic you knocking the Williams proposal yesterday only to suggest we bring in a 31 year old defenseman who will be 34 by the time his contract ends. But that’s ok. I contradict myself all the time. And Martinez looks like he still has a lot of gas in the tank. A proven winner who’s steady and reliable in his own end, old man Martinez would make a good partner for Rielly if we don’t re-sign even older man Hainsey. His $4M cap hit might be a bit of a problem though if Leafs aren’t trading out salary somehow. But hey, that’s what off season is for.

If Leafs strike out on big name dmen Pietro, Parakyo, or Hamilton, I posted the other day bout McQuaid from NYR, so another lesser name

MTL LHD Borgman 4th
Upgrade from Zaitsev. Petry two more years at 5.5 and might be more palatable then Gardiner for some. He is on his way to 50+ point season. 42 last year. Not as sexy as those mentioned above but boy r they going to be expensive.
Bergevin has said he is not going to buy to just make playoffs this year. Gives him another young D.

That $5.5M is still something Leafs might not be able to afford. Unless we dump salary somewhere, we really can’t afford anybody past this year. Now, I suppose that’s what offseason is for. We can figure it out then. But that could get costly trying to dump salary over the summer. We might end up losing more than just dead weight.
At any rate, I don’t think Leafs have much interest in Petry. He’s a RHD version of Gardiner as they come. Absolutely horrendous in his own end. He might do better on Leafs with a different system we play. I don’t know. It’s a bit of a question mark in my eyes.

If Leafs strike out on getting top 4 defenceman then they can still upgrade blueline.

McQuaid would upgrade 3rd pair with toughness and playoff experience, 68 career playoff games with Boston. Making only 2.75 for rest of this year then UFA.
NYR get young cheap blueliner over pending UFA who may walk. Maybe Leafs may have to throw in mid pick to complete trade.

Absolutely yes. NYR might be willing to do that. McQuaid is decent blue line player. At minimal he’s upgrade over Holl and Marincin. I’m sure we can squeeze him on 3rd pairing and see how he works and maybe even have him up beside Rielly to rest old man hainsey a few games here and there as we reach the stretch heading into playoffs. Very low risk trade that has potential to be high reward depending on what’s McQuaid does for us. If he scores game winner of cup final, this could be the best trade Dubas ever makes his entire career.

I know Dubas not interested in rentals but cannot completely disregard.

Will provide grit and still plays good minutes at 37 yo. Currently plays 18:29 minutes.
I figure DET asks for 1st instead of 3rd. The moment they ask for 1st I hang up phone. Not interested in paying much more for 37 yo rental.
I would CONSIDER 2nd NOT 1st. Problem is, going to have to pay more for rental dman over rental forward.
Don't know DET stable of young dmen so they may ask for young forward from TOR instead.
Obviously better scenario would be dmen with term but will be more expensive.

Well, you’ve really thought this one through haven’t you. Absolutely love the first person narrative. Makes you feel like you’re actually in on the action. I mean, my ears still ringing from imagining the phone slam on poor Holland.
I can fully understand you not wanting to offer much in way of a 37 year old rental. Which is why I am so surprised to find you making a pretty aggressive offer here. I’m pretty sure Holland would be thrilled with an offer like this. By way of comparison, Kempny, who is a much better player than Kronwall, went for a 3rd last year at deadline. Oleksiak, who is closer to Kronwall’s ranking, went for a 4th.

So your Colorado trade
1. They would get Matthews who will make btwn 12-14 AAV going forward yet they MacKinnon making half 6.3. MacKinnon also elite like AM.
2. Colorado would trade former 1st rounder Makar who is their #1 prospect
3. Colorado would trade OTT #1 which is gold
Leafs would trade Gardiner who could/ probably walks unless they give him something like 7x7.plus they would include who I believe is Jesper Lindgren, former mid rounder unknown playing in Europe plus a 3rd.
