I like Girardi and wouldn't mind this trade, but I think there is no chance the Rangers would do it. Even if the leafs project Lupul to have a bounce back year (highly unlikely) and Lupul can stay healthy and produce 30 goals and 40 assists. I still think NYR would shut the door.

Samquanch, I don't think Lupul can stay healthy either but he can only hurt the leafs for two more years. Girardi will hurt them for 4 more years because his cap hit is 5.5. Toronto says "NO".

Enough with the JVR and Nylander trade proposals.
We just drafted the best player available in the world and I'd like him to have someone to pass to! JVR is a young stud probably the best scorer from in tight and that go to the net guy we need. Nylander is simply going to become one of the most complete players in the league for a long time! So let's relax and see how this comes together. There are only two roster players the Leafs should trade Gardnier and Bernier, with the market for D-men where it's at I think you get the best return for Gardnier as you're going to and he's going to want a huge contract or simply walk away in free agency. Bernier is obvious use this trade to gamble on someone Hunter has a great nose for talent so let him roll the dice.

I agree with you in not trading them. But to make a bold statement like Nylander is going to become one of the most complete players in the league is a little extreme. He will be a great offensive player but from everything we've seen he has a very long way to go defensively.

Nylander will be a great offensive Smurff.
Trade Bernier to anyone for anything. Relief from his cap hit is the only important thing concerning Bernier.
Trade Gardiner within two years or as soon as the Leafs have gotten a really good run out of him. Trade him for a Dman prospect/pick combination.
Trade JVR before he runs out his contract to get a decent return. He may be part of the early rebuild, but he's not a part of the future.
We do not need JVR as a mentor for the kid's; he is tainted by the last few years and the best thing for him and the Leafs, is for him to go.
The Leafs could unload almost 30 M by next year, and should do it to be ready for quality future FA's, which will be the next step 1 or 2 years from now. Tightwad Lou should be retired by then, and Matthews will have forgiven the Leafs about the bonus issues.

It is to bad that JVR is not under contract for more then two years. I would love to see what kind of a season he could have if he ever played with a number #1 center. He did have a 30 goal season with Bozak . What could he have with Matthews? I think it will take atleast half a season for Matthews to get use to the speed of the NHL and fiscal play. But once he does, a players like JVR should be good for 40 goal per year. Unfortunitly I don't think he will be around long enough for us to find out.

Bozak is a right handed center. You would have to think that would have been ideal for JVR.
The problem was they had a right handed goal suck in Phatdog who demanded to be fed the puck(with ketchup) all the time. It's no wonder JVR's numbers didn't go up. They were incompatible with Kessel.
Note: JVR was doing fine this year until Princess Pylon shot him in the foot.
If the rebuild goes quicker, then you can always extend JVR's contract for 5 years. You really don't lose much either way. But I think it's better both financially and roster wise to trade him now, assuming you can get a young player and a 1st for him, before his next contract
Matthews is a LH centre so he might not work as well with JVR. But I think Nylander is RH, and that may work well. Handedness with forwards is more important on defense, all things said; but there are optimum setups depending on your players and their style of play.
Putting Matthews with Marner and Martin as a 3rd line is really enticing for a number of obvious reasons if you watched the Knights this year.
Trade Bozak, Michalek, Laich, Lupul (BOL), Greening, Frose. Get what you can for them. Prefferably a quality RH Dman or a RW.
So how about some lineups - all lines will prove where they belong. The two best players on each line are matched by handedness.
JVR(LH) .Nylander(RH). Brown(RH)
Komarov(LH). Kadri(LH).Soshnikov(RH)
Martin(LH) . Matthews(LH). Marner(RH)
Rychel/Leipsic(LH). Freddy the Goat(LH) . Kapanen/Linberg(RH)
Freddy can be replaced by Hyman if he doesn't pan out.
Hunwick . Reilly (Still reversed until we get a RH D for Reilly)
Gardiner . Polak (Gardiner needs a stay a home D)
Marincin . Zaitsev (Depends upon how well Zaitsev does)
Dermott (LH) and Nielson (RH) might be up the year following.
Note: Handedness doesn't matter for Uncle Leo as he will be hitting the opponent into the boards and pouncing on rebounds.

Ya guys enough with trading JVR and/ or Nylander.
JVR is the best player we have with any experience best scorer in the league from in tight and I'd like some players for Mattews to have someone to pass to. Nylander will be one of the most complete players in the NHL for years to come. Let's see what we've built so far no rush! Gardnier and Bernier only two roster players that should be traded at this point.
