I obviously don't think age will catch up with Marleau this year, but what happens if it does, what will we do with him, I have come up with two ideas
1. Move him down to the third line and move Johnsson up to take his spot
2.Trade him for Skinner at the deadline to clear cap space. Skinner's contract will be at its lowest value at the deadline that it could get and I think the leafs can survive until then with all of their talent up front
This is what I think the trade would look like:
To leafs:
Skinner
To Carolina:
Marleau, 1st 2019, Sandin, Pickard
Carolina would want a lot to take Marleau's contract and this could cost the leafs Sandin, but they already have so many young D in their system (Liljgren, Borgman, Durzi, Subban) so I don't think it would be a huge pill to swallow, especially when Sandin is considered by a lot of people to have top 4D Potential and no elite potential
Trading Marleau for 1 year from Skinner for the playoffs would also clear cap space to help pay the big 3
Trading Pickard wouldn't be too bad as well especaially since Sparks is considered to be better and younger
Which would u rather do?
Forward Lines for playoffs:
Skinner/Matthews/Nylander
Hyman/Tavares/Marner
Johnsson/Kadri/Kapanen
Grundström or Ennis/Lindholm/Brown

Remember this is only if age catches up with Marleau, so let’s say he has less then 20 points before the deadline playing on a line with Matthews and Nylander
Also I just realized it would probably be better if he had a least 1 first round pick in these 2 years so change the 2019 1st to a 2020 1st.

You love over paying for everything eh? Marleau is a team first guy, pretty sure he could end up with "an injury" if leafs need cap space.

Leafs will trade Marleau July 2, 2019 after the $5 MM bonus is paid for a prospect.

I would sign Maroon to a $3 MM contract for 4 years, if the Leafs believe the salary cap will go up to $82.5 MM next year

Also, I would trade Gardiner + Brown for Spurgeon

Also Trade Hainsey + Leivo+ 4 th round for Demers

Marleau Matthews Nylander
Maroon Taveras. Marner
Hymen. Kadri. Kapanen
Johnsson. Lindholm. Jooris

Ennis Subban

Reilly. Spurgeon
Demers Zaitsev
Dermott. Carrick
Holl

Anderson
sparks

Kessel

$82 MM for 2019/ 20

Marleau must be traded but Leafs will have plenty room.

Mathews, Marner, and Tavares will end up with an injury? Stuff happens. If it isn't broke why fix it? . Leafs have on paper; top 3 offense in the NHL, tweak defense? Let's not give away 1st round picks for an instant; short-term satisfaction. How "a-boat" this; Let's play out this year with what we have and have fun watching?
Go Leafs!

Marleau's contract for the 3rd year is very tradable. Not a lot of cash, so you don't need to overpay someone to take it.

Marleau had NMC but I'm sure he would go back to San Jose if his skills show any signs of erosion this season.

2019-20 leafs may want to do same as they did with Martin. But only if his skills fall off drastically. 2019-20 his cap hit is 6.5 million but after July 1 2019 he is only owed 1.5 million. The sharks would jump all over that contract I'm sure.

Skinner (an expiring contract) for Marleau, a 1st, Sandin (another 1st) and Picard seems like a massive overpayment and something Kyle Dubas is highly unlikely to do.
About the only GM's in the league who would do a deal like this are Bergevin, Benning and Garth Snow who was recently fired.

MostLeaf

You do realize Skinner is UFA end of this year right?

Marleau could be dropped to 4th line if need be. He’s got to be better than anyone we have right now.

I don’t know if Marleau is going to finish his career as a Leaf. We might trade him back to SJ final year of his contract. But I doubt it. Right now he’s a very valuable veteran who can pop a lot of goals and make big plays still.

Go Leafs.

The amazing thing about our current line up is that even if Marleau slows down he can just play the third line where he’s familiar. With Kadri. Play more of a defensive role which won’t be affected by his reduced speed.

We don’t need anymore help up front. We currently have 1 extra player who is NHL proven. Grundstrom will make an appearance next season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Engvall either.

If we are going to sell any assets it will be for a dman. It better be a world class dman if we’re giving up everything you are offering for Skinner lol.

If Marleau has a down year we can easily trade him in summer after his bonuses are paid off. Other team would only have to actually pay him $1,000,000 if I’m not mistaken.
