Trouba is a very solid defenceman but it was the situation Winnipeg that brought his value down. Everyone knew that Trouba did not intend to sign longer than the final year of his RFA status and he was leaving Winnipeg no matter what. There is no gaurentee he plans to sign long term with any team acquiring his rights so he essential is a rental that still needs to be signed to a large price tag.

Having him hold out for a massive price tag in Winnipeg screws them out of the possibility of resigning Myers or going after other UFA/ Trade options. Winnipeg is looking to compete now trading Trouba for all futures doesn't help them at the moment. They get a serviceable defenceman and there first back that they can shop for Immediate help in the 2c hole.

If Trouba was signed or had more rfa years it would be a different story, I think the Jets made a smart move cutting bait before the situation got worse and can now focus on other things.

The only way that this would work is if it was kesler plus something for Marleau + Horton.

The leafs would get cap relief for this season (approx 5million) to sign Marner then have to deal will the kesler contract for the next 2 seasons they way they have been dealing with Horton by using the LTIR.

For the ducks they would take an additional 5 mil cap hit to start this season before they could move Horton to LTIR, but in real money they would owe Marleau only 4.25mil and Horton 3.6mil. So they would pay an extra million dollars in cash this year to get out of owing kesler and additional 2 years off 6.8mil.

The leafs definitely have the financial muscle to save the ducks almost 13mil cash, but it's also just kicking the problem down the road and instead of getting out of hortons 5.3 at the end of the year your digging deeper with keslers 6.8 for 2 years when Freddy and Reilly come up for extensions, so I think this would be a last resort kinda move.

Kesler counts against the cap until day 1 of the season then he can be placed on LTIR so the leafs would just have the same problem except it would be every summer until Keslers deal is up.

There are maybe like 10 true #1 one defenceman in the league, but Slavin is in that tier below. With that cap hit he is one of the best contracts in the NHL, if he was in a bigger market he would be talked about non stop. He only gets traded if the owner gets a top end scorer in return.

Pesce is the defence the Leafs should target, fleury is a high pick but is overrated he struggled to get into Carolinas top 6.

If the leafs want to trade for doughty he better be ready to play 45min a night since they won't be able to fill out the rest of their roster with another 11 million dollar a year player.

Leafs fans are running Zaitsev out of town for a 7th round pick because he's overpaid and he only makes 4.5m a season, once doughty starts to decline while making 11 million he will be the next whipping boy and torn to shreds in Toronto. I'd say look elsewhere for a #1 defenceman.
