Would this work

Ani marleau

Tor kesler

At first this is odviously a huge mistake. Take a closer look and you will see kesler is done for good but still gets his money much like horton. So just like they did in that deal , they trade contract they can't get out of cap wise no matter how hard they try for a guy who can't play so becomes long term injure releived.

Aniheim sees this as they actually pay a guy to play instead of paying him to be hurt.

Toronto can afford this

Thoughts?

It could work. If Kessler wasn’t so intent on coming back. Last I read, he still thinks he can play. I guess we could force him to take LTIR like we did Lupol. I don’t know.

Kesler counts against the cap until day 1 of the season then he can be placed on LTIR so the leafs would just have the same problem except it would be every summer until Keslers deal is up.

@Leafsgm, so here it works and for Gaborik it doesn't. Explain.

@16

In Craigger’s proposal here, there is no intention to buy Marleau out, he would be playing for Anaheim. Marleau actually wants to go to the west coast again, he doesn’t want to go to Ottawa. There is attempt to circumvent cap, and Anaheim receives a player that will be playing for them. Ottawa would be buying out Marleau and have a cap hit over $3M for two years for a player not even playing for them.

80% of Gaborik’s contract is covered by insurance. The Clarkson for Horton trade is completely different set of circumstances and entirely irrelevant. As so much of Gaborik’s salary is covered by insurance, so he isn’t costing Ottawa anything. His salary is permanent LTIR and doesn’t count against cap ever (same as Horton on Leafs) . If Marleau is bought out, his salary does count against the cap and has to be paid in full by the Senators. So they lose money doing this and gain nothing.

As I said regarding Craigger’s trade, this proposal would only work if Kesler was pushed into LTIR. If he was intent on playing again, he would count against our cap hit, and it wouldn’t work.

Now do you see the difference?

*sic

There is NO attempt to circumvent cap in Craigger’s proposal.

I missed the very important word NO in my explanation.

This is a no. Kesler is basicaly Marleau on an even worse contract.

The only way that this would work is if it was kesler plus something for Marleau + Horton.

The leafs would get cap relief for this season (approx 5million) to sign Marner then have to deal will the kesler contract for the next 2 seasons they way they have been dealing with Horton by using the LTIR.

For the ducks they would take an additional 5 mil cap hit to start this season before they could move Horton to LTIR, but in real money they would owe Marleau only 4.25mil and Horton 3.6mil. So they would pay an extra million dollars in cash this year to get out of owing kesler and additional 2 years off 6.8mil.

The leafs definitely have the financial muscle to save the ducks almost 13mil cash, but it's also just kicking the problem down the road and instead of getting out of hortons 5.3 at the end of the year your digging deeper with keslers 6.8 for 2 years when Freddy and Reilly come up for extensions, so I think this would be a last resort kinda move.
