I really want to know why everyone is so against trading Knies. If Kyler is right and the ask is a top pairing D++ I don't see the issue.
I'm a big fan of Knies, but if you want a top pairing D as everyone has said, if you want a retool, he's really the only trade chip.
What if you got something like a top 15 pick in this draft, top pairing D and a prospect, would that not make this team better now and in the future?

No, it wouldn’t.

My only gripe I have with moving Knies is because it’s the same playbook as the Kadri situation. We have a player that plays a type of game everyone wants to see and the solution is to punt them out the door… Knies has not even peaked yet and he’s already a unicorn type player.
Personally I think moving Knies will ultimately blow up in Toronto's face. They have lots of cap space, make 1–2 free agent signings and stay patient.

Not to mention he’s been training with Matthews in Arizona. Find a Rw for that first line. McKenna second line with Nylander and get a 2c.

They are against moving Knies because he's a very unique, high quality young player. It's also feeling very inevitable that they do in fact move him because...
a. They won the draft lottery and will have a glut of left handed wingers.
b. They have the worst D corp in the Atlantic, and there's no guarantee they get Raddysh, and even if they do, there's no guarantee Raddysh can replicate last year's performance.
c. He's the only high quality asset without trade protection.
d. They don't have any 1st round picks. Corporate wants playoff revenue, and they can't afford to shit the bed another year and happen upon a top 3 pick. They're on their own for the next 2 years.
e. The value of Knies is such that they, in theory, could both acquire valuable roster pieces to help them compete for a playoff spot next year AND address the need going forward to get younger in light of them not having their next 2 first rounders.

OK OK. I know the Knies lovers will hate this. But what the heck. If we can bring in Multiple pices and make another team overpay, why not do it? He literally is the only piece that get us a good foundation in return? As far as people calling him a Unicorn, what do people consider a Unicorn? To me it's guys that can do things that are not expected from them at their size etc? Like Mario Lemieux or Tage Thompson, Guys that are extemely large that can stick handle in a phone booth, that kind of thing.
Guys liek Shaefer than play defense but can drive to the net at a speed like McxDavid on the same shift. I like Knies but I don't see a Unicorn. I see a very very good power Forward . Not great Defensively but a good Offensive power forward. Is Knies training with Mattews? I heard he trains in Minnesota. Might be wrong. And if he was training with Matthews in Arizona? Why would that matter? He practiced with him for the last 3 seasons in Toronto. I am sure a summer of trining will not change either of them much.

@suffering I'm happy to know at least someone else sees it. He's a young power forward which is fantastic. He is not going to put up 100pts or 50g though.
If someone will hand over a return like MTL was prepared to do or even more if a bidding war starts, why would anyone ever be against that?

I think you wait and see what you can do in free agency before you make a decision on Knies.

I would far sooner see Nylander and Matthews trade before Knies! But there are many delusional Leafs fans that over value the Leafs players. Like “why don’t the Leafs trade Robertson to San Jose for the 2nd overall pick”.
Yes you’s know who you are.
Unfortunately you have to trade something of value to get something of value. Rumor has Buffalo listen on Byron and if we can get them to add someone else or a first I might then part with Knies.

It has to be Makar, Shafey or Werenski, that type of a home run and the Leafs aren’t stupid. I really doubt it’ll happen. Just a slow media day gotta report something.

I’m just don’t get how people don’t se what Knies brings. Staal an experienced power forward but these guys are always your best players in playoffs. See it time and time again. Just like Hyman was but Knies is better than Hyman. But as Hrenkin says “have to go be up something good to get something good”. Just makes me shake my head. Trade freaking Nylander, he will get you a similar package and he doesn’t have half the heart Knies has. I’m so dumbfounded every time I see this debate, for me you get guys like this who have the right frame of mind, play the right way, never take short cuts and build around this guy and let him be the example the young guys look up to.
Not Willy and his no backcheck, drive, no compete in corners or on a backcheck. And whenever he changes he skates to the bench 2mph. Like what is that telling the young guys? If Leafs move this guy, I’m done, another GM that has no clue and keeps giving away guys that can lead to a sniff at the Cup. Still shake my head at the Woll trade for literally nothing, so I’m scared it could happen again.

I seriously believe this is Toronto media making this ? up about the Leafs quietly shopping Knies. Ppl say they r heavy on the left side. But with what? Joshua, Robertson, Maccelli. Lorentz, cmon, you can't be serious? Imagine Knies and McKenna as your top 2 left wingers.
I wouldn't give that up, sorry. Go sign a Rd instead of trading for one by giving up Knies. Anderson, Raddysh, trade away Reilly more cap space. I heard they r aggressively shopping Robertson and Maccelli. Don't need to give up Knies when u have cap space. I'd get rid of Stolarz too.

@Clarky Nylander does not get the same package as Knies. Willy has a full NMC, is almost 30 and signed for over 11m per season.
Knies is 23 and signed to a reasonable cap hit. If Nylander was willing to waive his NMC and could get the same return then yes, I agree.
Did I just see Makar or Werenski for Knies? Lmao. Knies isn't McDavid. He isn't worth the best defenceman in the world by a mile. If Knies was a centre that was at 35g and 90pts then you could make that case. As a 60pts winger you just can't expect that kind of return.

Not only has Knies not reached his peak as a player yet but he is signed at a very team friendly contract.
It would have to be a very special package to pry Knies out of the Leafs lineup.

The problem is LL you only count points. What about how they play or what they bring to the team? A guy that’s willing to go balls to the wall for the team is contagious. You need to set an identity, this team doesn’t have one.
I’d rather the team rally around how Knies plays over Nylander. Caufield had a million goals this year but who would rather in the playoffs between him and Slafkovsy? Slaf all day.
