I'm starting to like the idea of trading JVR and replacing his spot with Kappy.

Here are some of my offers.

Tor: JVR

CLB: David Savard

Helps Columbus for the expansion and gives the leafs the RHD they've been looking for. Toronto goes with protecting 4d and 4F

Tor: JVR

NSH: Fabbro and 2nd

If Nashville goes for a cup run.

Are these reasonable?

Chicago loses cap in Kruger and get more picks for this years draft sense they are hosting. Toronto gets a pick in a better draft + an okay dman. They could buyout Kruger.

So let's try to make it work;

TOR: 2018 1st, Lupul, 3rd 2018 SJS,

CHI: Kruger, 2017 1st and Pokka

At first I hated the above deal, then after thinking about it; The Hawks are in cap space hell (2.7M projected cap space 2017/ 2018-CF) and in it for the next two years.

So I modified the deal where the Leafs and the Hawks exchange 1sts as above but using the Leafs 2018 instead. The SJ 3rd, and the taking on of Kruger's contract (might be the best 4th line center in the league) is payment for Pokka. It's hard to offer anything other than Lupul or picks/ prospects back, since the Hawks can't afford what they already have. (Panarin 6M) .

The reasoning for the Leafs drafting more this year, is that the draft, while of average overall quality, has a number of intriguing D prospects through the rounds 1-2, maybe even the first half of the 3rd. This gives the Leafs two shots at Cal Foote, Makar, and Timmins, and others depending on the draft order.

It's time to put the acquisition of quality RHD on the forefront, as our stable of RHD depth is, well; Justin Holl, and Jesper Lindgren. "

Our window to take on salary in exchange for picks etc; is arguably 2 years. So we take on Kruger's 3.083M for 2years and get a fairly young "cup experienced" 4th line LW/ C. One of the best defensively.

Assuming a 2 year bridge deal of 2.5 M or less for Pokka (no NHL experience, but solid AHL), we arrive at Lupuls salary roughly balancing the deal for the 1st year from the Leafs point of view.

The Leafs won't need, and may not even be able to use, Lupul's LTIR this year when you consider they still have Horton's and 13M+ available.

As for accumulation of so many RHD's. RHD's as we all know are valuable commodities, and can easily be traded for good return.

Why would the Hawks take on Lupuls salary

1) It's only for 1 year.
2) They can use his 5.25 for LTIR;
3) It's a potential 10M+ "cap space" swing for them (not salary) .

Why would the Hawks give up Pokka?
1) They can't protect Pokka and probably can't afford to pay him.
2) The Hawks don't need him while they are stuck with Seabrook, Keith, and Hjalmarsson.

They also have Panarin's 6M bridge deal to absorb, but that is an issue they stuck themselves with.

Maybe JVR (@2.125M) + one or two of our abundant good right wingers (say a max of 2 * 900k) ; the Hawks do have contract space. Save them 2M in contract space.

Carrick becomes unprotected, but he does anyway if they make any deal for a Dman. We could trade Carrick in this deal, but we are trying to corner the market here. A deal can be made with Vegas, in order to keep him.

Then it's "Mr. Bowman, lets's talk about left wingers, but make it quick, we will have the Ducks on the line right after they fail to win the cup". GO PRED's GO!

Who adds? Not sure how high he's valued. Josh Leivo could be effective on Toronto.

Nyr: Ryan McDonagh

Who adds? Rangers get a serviceable replacement and get younger. Something like the Brassard trade. Leafs get a top pairing dman and allow Rielly to develop in a top 4 role.
