First, I believe Stamkos contract will be more than an AAV of $9.5M, more like $10M - $11M and I doubt the Leafs are trading JVR away for Shattenkirk.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Been trying to trade him since they drafted him. In two years, you are better keeping bozak then him. Even if you keep bozak for full two years or trade him march '18 and get something. Later that year and next you are going to have to start new contracts for Nylander, Marner and Matthews.
Keep thinking two years out all the time with cap. Two years out kadri will still have 4x4.5 left. Ugly. The other three will probably exceed 4.5 AAV. Sure they can sign them for bridge contracts but don't think so.

two years out Kadri will be cheap at that price. Who'd been trying to trade him, you? Leafs could have if they really wanted to. Babcock likes him so he'll stay unless his progress stops. For what he can do, he'll be a bargain in two years. unless like I said, his play moves backward, or his off ice bullshit. ask anyone from London about that. LOL

Now, you are assuming he is a bargain in 2 years. You are probably also assuming that cap will continue to go up. Very minimal rise in cap for this coming year. I believe more because players used their 5% escalator clause then economics. We all know cdn$ is down and not looking good for near future. This shit comes into play when dealing with cap big time as you know. I'm not willing to predict that cap is much higher in two years.
I will assume in two years the other three I mentioned will be much better in two years then today. More upside to their game then idiot boy from London.
Idiot boy's contract not going to help their cap in two years. Now I will also admit that although I hate his contract, all leafs need in two years is one stupid gm to take his contract because it could be tradeable.
Still think bozak for another 12-18-24 months, they are better off both on and off the ice when keeping cap in mind.

3 trades I can see the Leafs making this week:
1) Leafs: Tyler Bozak
Jets: Chris Thorburn, 2016 4th pick and
2017 3rd pick
2) Leafs: Peter Holland
Rangers: 2016 4th round pick (ARI)
3) Leafs: Bernier (0-50% retained)
Devils: 2016 6th round pick
-Leafs get cap space.
-Jets get a solid 3rd line center and they got the cap space to pay him next 2 years.
-Rangers can sign Holland cheap and play in on the bottom 6 no problem.
-Devils finally get a good backup goalie for Cory Schneider and they got 27M in cap space so Bernier's contract wouldn't bother them.

1. Not sure jets need Bozak. thorburn is a very good energy guy for them and cheap. they have Little on the books AAV 4.7 and now have to sign scheifele for prob AAV 5. they have dano and burmistrov listed as centers and will have to sign both soon. possible trade.
2. holland doesn't do anything for them. they have brassard and stepan on the books long term at 5 and 6.5 AAV. they now need to sign kreider for at least 4-5 AAV. they have own internal guys like jt miller to sign. miller 43 points in 82 games and is rfa.
3. maybe. lou may be able to get slightly higher pick, 4th, for bernier with or without retaining.

Leafs: Brendan Leipsic, Rinat Valiev, 2016 2nd round pick (TOR), and 2016 4th round pick (COL)
Avs: Barrie
Leipsic can play on bottom 6 next season and Vailey is a solid dman prospect and Col saves money for now to resign MacKinnon and get 2 picks in the process.
And for Leafs they got such a keep prospect pool and picks this year that it wouldn't be a problem and they get a dman to play with Rielly.

Don't believe Avalanche will bite on that offering. The price for Barrie will be an overpayment by one of several teams looking to pick him up in a trade.
He would look really good in a Leaf's uniform but in order to get him, Leafs would need to add a player like Komarov or JVR in the mix.

I'm sorry but not understanding the hype around Barrie he is like there best option as a offensive D man yet there going to just let him walk.come on people he just happens to be there only choice as a offensive D man. Connor Brown isn't worthless or decent. He's so underrated. He'll be a solid top 9 two-way forward with the Leafs that will get powerplay and PK time.

Berniers a UFA next year so don't include him in the expansion draft talks but the Leafs have to trade him this week to clear cap space for July 1st!
