I’m unsure how to view not qualifying Maccelli.

Yes he’s redundant with McKenna, Robertson and Cowan, all look-alikes in size and relative skill sets.

I guess Chayka is making that decision based on his inability to trade or package him for a satisfactory return.

I think the Leafs took to much time in making the GM decision, leaving very little time to build and execute a thorough offseason strategy.

Believe it or not, LeafsLife, to qualify him, it would have cost $4.1 million. They were right to let him go. Because if they had qualified him and he didn't accept that amount, he was eligible to go to arbitration.

He could have got the $4.1 or could have got a friendly arbitrator that would give him more. There were a few guys today that didn't get qualifying offers that will UFA's that could end up being not bad guys to snag.

I was hoping for a trade to get something back.
That’s why I was unsure.

If no other team signs him I would try to resign him in the $2.5m range and trade him for what it cost us, a R3 2027.

Someone will sign him for $3.25 or $3.5. Most teams that would not trade for him knew the Leafs would not qualify him and those teams didn't want to trade for him to have to qualify him.

Makes sense for whoever signs him. Firstly you get him for less than the $4.1 qualifying and .... you didn't have to give up a trade piece to do that.
