Minnesota Wild - Toronto Maple Leafs

Maple Leafs trade Gardiner, Brown, a 2019 1st Rd pick and prospect Sandin to the Wild in exchange for Niedereitter and Dumba

You could offer that just for Dumba and they would say No!

I actually don’t think this is as bad as Jminn believes. Gardiner is about Dumba’s equal. We give them a 1st to account for age difference and fact Dumba is RHD. Brown + 1st (Sandin) for Neidereitter seems pretty close in value.

With Minny so close to cap max, they might accept this trade. It gives them two players that can contribute right away, and a pick and prospect for future development, and it lowers their salary. It’s theee very good reasons for Minny to take this deal.

If anything, the more I consider this trade, the more I think we are overpaying here.

Leafs pass.

Why because we are giving up a UFA in Gardiner after this year. Brown (who I do like but is falling on depth chart) and Sandin who is a few years away and no guarantee on him. The first round pick will probably be after the 25th pick again so no guarantee on him either.

Dumba and Niedereitter are two of the better younger players in the league and are both controllable for a few years.

The wild need to win now with their aging large contracts. Trading these two would set them back.

I would assume the deal would be contingent on Gardiner signing an extension first.

Gardiner is at least Dumba’s equal. And Brown isn’t far behind Neidereitter. Adding a first to go along with either of these guys seems like an overpayment. Leafs are also in a win now mentality, and we need to keep our own costs low. Moving a highly rated prospect like Sandin and a 1st round pick to go along with Gardiner (who is ranked higher than Dumba) and Brown is mortgaging our future.

The difference between Gardiner and Dumba is not a 1st. And the difference between Neidereitter and Brown is not Sandin.

And question: Do we even need Neidereitter? He would be third line RW at best. We are trading Brown because he is victim to depth. Why bring in another RW? If Minny makes the trade, it would be because the perceived value of Brown + 1st is greater than Neidereitter’s value. In which case, we lose.

This trade proposal sounds very similar to the one posted by James Tanner in an article, although his focus was on the Leafs acquiring Spurgeon. If I am not mistaken, the trade proposal was something along the lines of "Three first rounders, Liljegren, Kapanen, Sparks, Timashov and Hainsey. "

Personally, I think the Leafs need to continue the course and be patient rather than overspend just as LeafsGM mentioned. If we look carefully at what Toronto is doing, is that they are building their team from within, which includes their defence.

I like the trade but I'm not sure the Wild will be as excited about it.

I like this trade. I don’t believe it’s one that would ever happen though. I think the value going each way is fair. It’s just that this would be a cap nightmare in the future. I’m all for making a big splash this year but not at the expense of giving our 1st this year and next. Maintaining a constant presence in the playoffs and multiple runs for the cup means we will have to have cost controlled talent in a few years. That’s where Liljegren, Sandin, Grundstrom, Engvall ext. We don’t know which ones are going to work out yet. If we trade them all away we will be losing players who will provide talent and skill on an ELC. Those players will be crucial once TMNM are all locked in.

You also have to remember Dumba is an RFA now, going to arbitration. What is his contract going to be? The Leafs have to be cautious on LT commitments on the blue line right now until they know the numbers of the Big 3.

Matardri,
I thought your response was excellent and dead on accurate with the importance of supplementing rosters with cost controlled talent. It’s the way teams are rolling these days which is why there’s such a premium on 1st rounders and top prospects. In a pre cap era, it wouldn’t have mattered as much to hold onto as many young assets but I do like the Leafs strategy in building patiently within their organization among other avenues to improving their team and sticking to their long term plan.
