If Tavares is leaf bound your not signing trouba. 2019-20 season I have leafs at 83 million with very weak defence. But I have Martin still on books which he won’t be leafs can trade a pick and Martin just to get rid of him.

Leafs need liljegren and Rosen to be very good by start of 2019~ 20 season and Dermott to be solid second pairing guy.

Okay, tons of things wrong there David.

Martin can be ttraded easily, not a problem with our abundance of prospects. Rosen will never make 2 million, and borg won't make 1.5 either. Marner will never make 10 either, he's closer to Pasta money (6.6; possiblily higher, i'd think 7.5).

And you know Pittsburgh won with a dcore of Maatta, Daley, Dumoulin, Hainsey, Schultz, Ruhwedel, Streit? An excellent forward core and a solid goalie can mask a mediocore defense. And if Z bounces back, Dermott/ Liljegren step up, we trade for cheaper guys like Petrovic, and have Rielly, our dcore will be very similar to that of Pittsburghs cup winning core.

The Trouble With Trouba

Over 6 feet tall and over 200lbs. Just 24 years old and already has five years of NHL experience. A RHD, and a defensive defenseman, he averages 0.4 points a game, suggesting a real offensive potential contribution as well. When healthy he easily records over 100 hits and 109 blocked shots. And therein, lies The Trouble With Trouba: he is injured an awful lot. In his first five years, only once has Trouba managed to play a complete season. Is Trouba good? Hell yeah. Would I trade Liljegren for him, sign him for $7M a year, and eat the remainder of Mason’s contract? Hell no. Trouba is damaged goods. U TIL he puts together at least two full seasons in a row, I wouldn’t even consider taking him for the Leafs.

I like Trouba, but like Tanev, he’s not someone I would take on just now. Just too darn injury prone. We don’t need another Lupol, but this time on defense.

You’re giving Marner an awful lot. You really think he’s worth as much as Matthews?

I’m assuming Tavares is captain? I kinda think make Matthews and Tavares co-captains and pay them each $11M.

Defense is very weak in this scenario. It’s kinda scary. Instead of Nylander, we can trade Marner for Doughty? (Just a thought. Of course it would never happen and I wouldn’t seriously consider it ever happening. Just putting it out there as an option) .

$7 million for Trouba seems fair for a top pairing defenseman.
He was the Jets top defenseman and would be a monster playing along side Morgan Rielly.

LeafsGm maybe I’m overpaying some guys but mariner could be equal to Kucherov this season 90 plus points. Leafs can play hardball because these guys are restricted or maybe everyone takes a bit less to allow the group to stay together. with Tavares and everyone working together on salary we talking super dynasty here. Leafs just need to fix defence.

You could trade Marleau after July 1, 2019 when bonus is paid and have a few million more to spend on a middle defenseman an additional savings of $2 MM TO 2.5 mm on Marner Salary. A savings of $2 MM on Martin.

Probably a net savings of $11 MM- 3.5 MM replacement players= $7.5 MM Savings to $75.5 mm, leaving more than enough to upgrade your defense based on your estimates DM.

You would have to add a lot to Lilegren if you expect to have a shot at Trouba.
