I've seen a lot of talk on here saying that Tanev isn't a good fit for Toronto. Do people not remember that he was paired with rielly for team Canada and they were their shut down pair? Tanev is a shot suppressor and complements rielly so well. He's got 3 more years at roughly 4.5. Here's my trade proposal.

TOR: Kapanen, Leivo, Carrick and a 2nd
VAN: Tanev

People will say that we're ruining our rebuild by giving away Kapanen but we have plenty of wingers coming up. Although I think he's going to be a stud in the NHL, we have guys that will fill his hole at this time. Tanev will come in for three years and be a solid shut down D man for us. We will also be considered TOP contenders for this coming years.

My projected lines for this coming year:

Marleau-Matthews-Nylander
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Komarov-Kadri-Brown
Martin-Moore-Hyman

Rielly-Tanev
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Hainsey.

Thank you finally someone who looks at something other than how a player looks on a S*** team. Switch kapanen for bracco or another prosepct (anyone but liljgren) and well done. I understand trading kapanen but he will be a top six and will most likely be a 30 goal winger maybe 40 playing with Matthews.

Good trade.

Stop giving up Kapanen! You even admit he will become a stud.

You have to give up studs to get them in return. Kapanen doesn't fit in the team right now and we'll have guys to replace him in a couple years. They might not become top 6 RW but we'll have marner and nylander to fill out those spots for years to come.

Albeit there are teams that would give up an exorbitant amount of players for one player. I for one would say no to that. going price or not. GM's make stupid deals for players that aren't worth what the team gives up or pays in contracts. ie; Phaneuf and many more!
I would trade JVR for Tanev. nothing more. I hope the Leafs say no to this lunacy. Giving up all those players for one is nuts.

After much thought, if the Leafs do pick up a top 4 D this would mean holding on to JvR, Bozak and Komarov and losing them for nothing. Whether Lou and Co want to go for it now or not will determine their moves.

Picking up a top 4 D without including JvR, Bozak or Leo is a pretty clear indicator the Leafs will hang on to all of them and possibly trade picks/ prospects at deadline on a rental.

Personally, I rather stay true to the rebuild and trade JvR for youth and figure out a plan of action for Leo and Bozak.

Maybe instead of Kapanen and carrick. Maybe rhychel or a prospect like Bracco and Marchenko.

The Tanev deal sounds a lot like something the past Leafs management might have been all over. As others have outlined, you’ve identified Kapanen as a future stud player. Being so, why would you give up on a potential stud for an older shut down defenseman?

Tanev is nearly 8 years older, already in the prime of his career, if not at the beginning of the decline, and your proposal is to overpay for past performance of a player? Tanev is a good defenceman, but he is not worth giving up on someone like Kapanen. Keep in mind, the price for Kapanen was Kessel (who’s ranked 12th in league scoring for the last five years) .

In a league that favours mobile, puck moving defencemen, why on earth would Toronto even consider this trade? Lou Lamoriello has already gone on record that trades that benefit the present without compromising the future will be considered. Trading away Kapanen contradicts managements message.

I’m on board with the others here who believe that if the Leafs are making trades, they will be moving out the older players (i. e. Komarov, JVR, Bozak) or dead money (i. e. Lupul, Horton) . If the Leafs are trading Kapanen, they’re getting back a player of similar age and abilities (think Drouin for Sergachev) .

It's understandable as fans that we are looking for answers to the defense. These short-cut trades are what got Toronto into the mess they were in.

Patience is the key. It may not be long before we have our top pairing d. Liljegren ready.
