I am thinking that JVR and a first was not enough for Harmonic from the Islanders, so maybe a Carolina thing would work. I would offer JVR, Rychel, and a first round pick for Faulk. I would make the pick a second if JVR resigns. I may be alone in thinking that a deal like this works, as Carolina needs forwards and has depth that will need to be signed on the back end. I think it works.

I'm not sure Carolina makes this deal for a number of reasons:

First, we are speculating/ assuming that Carolina is looking to part ways with Faulk or use him in a potential forward deal since the Canes have an abundance at defence;

Second, JVR's status is as a rental for any team acquiring him. They're probably going to lose the guy at free agency;

Third, the loss of JVR would mean readdressing the forward issue and the need at left wing which is putting the canes back at square one;

Fourth, Faulk is under contract for another three seasons at a manageable salary. If you're highest paid defender and also your best defender is making a reasonable amount, it's easier for the GM to use him as a comparison when negotiating with the other defence;

Fifth, the Canes already have Faulk under contract for theee seasons. They know how much he's going to be making and can forecast expenses more easily. They may have room in the cap but they are not a financial power like the Leafs.

Sixth, What will JVR cost the Canes after the season? JVR will be looking for a big payday and a long term contract. Are the canes prepared to make him one if not the highest paid player on the team? Would you want JVR as the highest paid player on your team? You may be wondering how that is? The canes highest player salary comes in at 6 million per (Staal) . Could you imagine the Canes using up 12-14 million per for Staal and JVR?

Seventh, signing JVR long term may impact the Canes ability to sign one of their younger players once they are out of their ELC. Why do you think Toronto has JVR on the trading block? It's not that he's a bad player. Far from it. But Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Brown, etc., are priority and there isn't enough pie for everyone;

Eighth, if I'm Ron Francis, I'm not interested in JVR or Rychel. Instead I'm focusing on acquiring another young forward with potential to play in the top six and be with my team for years to come.

Again these are just some of my initial thoughts about JVR being traded for a younger top pairing defenceman. don't get me wrong, I would love to see them parlay their older pending UFA's into younger top pairing talent, but we're living in a very analytic and economic consciencous NHL.? Teams looking to go on a long playoff run will look to add a JVR to their team but not through subtraction of their current starting lineup. Toronto should expect futures in return for moving JVR.

Leafs defencemen issues are going to be corrected soon with young in house entry level contracts Liljegren dermott Nielsen. I think they are trying to piece together cheaper options on defence until those 3 arrive. its good plan.

I think you're Davidmackin. Toronto's building from within.

4.) 26 Aug 2017 17:40:53
Dear Ares99r

U want to waste large cap dollars when entry level guys are about to arrive. Leafs signed Hainsey as short term solution then they signed 2 kids from Sweden. It's pretty clear leafs are just buying time.

5.) 26 Aug 2017 19:23:01
Sorry Davidmackin, I meant to say I think you're right about Toronto building within and using up cap if makes sense.

6.) 26 Aug 2017 19:40:21
Dear DavidMackin,

I'm not entirely sure that the Leafs are buying time or are they cautiously moving forward?

The most challenging part of a team rebuild is where the Leafs are now. Everyrhing fell into the Leafs favour this season with very few games lost to injury and from key members. The Leafs were very fortunate this way and I'm sure management thinks so as well.

Babcock had said how Tampa would have made the playoffs if not for all the injuries they had. He also compared their team with his and said that the Leafs would not have made the playoffs had they sustained all those injuries; that the Leafs lacked the depth necessary to survive those ordeals. The Islanders were also within reach. Florida had an off-season and Buffalo felt they would have been much better with a healthy Eichel.

The point I'm trying to make is that I think the Leafs are being careful with their decisions so as to not rush into something that could adversely affect their team's long-term success. Make no mistake, this season will present a host of new challenges and other teams will be ready.

The Leafs will spend where they see opportunity to make their team better and without compromising the teams long term success. I think that was roughly along the lines of how Lamorello put it.

Leafs have lots of backup at forward as long as Matthews mariner and nylander stay healthy ladringan is durable as well bozak always gets hurt and marleau age could catch up to him.

Kadri is always durable.

Pittsburgh needs not only help up the middle, but someone to rejuvenate Kessel. Clearly Bozaks time is nearing an end in Toronto. Why not put a package of sorts together to get Bozak and Kessel back together? I am sure he will not garner a top RHD defense, but certainly the Pens have something intriguing to offer.

TOR: Bozak, Linberg

PIT: 1st (30th OA), Dominik Simon.

Why is everyone trying to trade half of this team? They have a good start to the season. Please be patient.

Only a Montreal fan would propose such a trade so weighted in their favour. Lou can't stop laughing.
