I honestly think Ekblad is overrated. He's a good defenseman, sure. But he has never lived up to that 1st overall "exceptional player" status. People still see him as a potential future Norris trophy winner. But at this point, I got to think that's never going to happen, as he continues to be passed over by guys like Makar, Hughes, Heiskenan, Dahlin.

Ekblad is not a top tier defenseman. He is second tier. Maybe even third tier, depending on what qualities you value most in a defenseman.

I'm not saying he would t be a great player to have on the team. But knowing that Dubas almost had him for Kapanen+ makes me think that Nylander + Dermott is a significant overpay. Dubas is not the most astute gm when it comes to trades. So if even he recognizes that Ekblad is worth only Kapanen, not Nylander, then that tells me something. Especially in light of other trades involving defensemen lately.

I like the idea of trading for ekblad but would take more swap marner with nylander and the deal works.

Ekblad isn't quite the player we all thought he'd be. just like driasaitl is way more the player anyone ever thought he'd be.

This is more than fair value. nylander and ekblad are roughly same cap hit
Nylander is owed 10 million less actual money than ekblad over next 4 years so you could argue nylander with same cap hit but less money owed could be worth more except ekblad has extra year so that makes up the dermott differance.
