I can't believe there are so many anti leaf fans on this site who would say they would trade Mathews away if leafs got 1st choice and chose Mathews . Mathews is probably as good if not better then Stamkos, Crosby and Lemieux and it's only the second time the Leafs got a # 1 choice, look at what those three big centers did for there teams . The Leafs need a push in the right direction to help them try to win a cup and Mathews is a great start .

The Leafs can't go wrong with Matthews. i'm sure he will be a solid player, likely of Stamkos pedigree. not so sure about Gretz or Lemieux (Maybe McDavid could be in that conversation)
To consider trading Matthews to ARI doesn't make someone an Anti-Leaf fan. If we can pull a trade that lands us some hot assets in a lopsided trade to give up Matthews, i'm all for it (See Lindros trade)
I would trade Matthews to ARI if we could gain 2-3 solid assets in return.
Eg.
Matthews
for
Strome and Domi
(2 players that will likely be stars themselves. Domi is proving it, and Strome sure put himself in the same conversation as Matthews in the WJC)
Or
Matthews
for
Strome, Dvorak and either Perlini OR their 2016 1st

The ambiance of the Leafs finally selecting 1st overall is a nice thought to us fans, but realistically there are a ton of expamles of 1st overall picks being busts. There are 4 in my mind in the last 4 years. And 12 since 1990. Now what I mean by busts is that there are players taken after him in the first round who have become better frachise cornerstones than who was selected 1st overall.

1993- Alexandre Daigle
•Pronger #2, Kariya #4
1995- Bryan Berard
•Doan #7, Iginla #11
1996- Chris Philips (altogether bad draft)
1999-Patrik Stefan
•Sedin's #2&3 or anyone else
2000- Rick Depietro
•Gaborik #3, Justin Williams #28
2001- Ilya Kovalchuck
•Spezza #2
2006- Erik Johnson
•Toews #3, Kessel #5, Giroux #22
2010- Taylor Hall
•Seguin #2 (this one's close though)
2012- Nail Yakupov
•Gelchenyuk #3, Reilly #5
Yeah everyone can argue these selections but my point is maybe it's better to gain more picks to draft more prospects in the hopes that the Leafs pick someone who develops into a star. Look around the league and see the teams who don't have a 1st overall selection leading their team as either a top defender league wide, top scorer, or all around captain.
Anaheim- Getzlaf & Perry taken late 1st round
Arizona- Doan, Domi, OEL taken mid 1st round
Boston-Chara 7th rdp, Bergeron & Rask late 1st
Calgary- Giordano
Carolina- Staal brothers early 1st round picks
Columbus- Bobrovsky
Dallas- Benn 5th round pick
Detroit- Zetterberg & Datsyuk they don't even have their rounds anymore
LA- Kopitar, Brown, Doughty early to mid 1st round
Minnesota- Koivu
Montreal- Suban 2nd rdp
Nashville- Weber 2nd rdp
New Jersey- Elias
NYR- Lundqvist
Ottawa- Ryan, Karlsson early first round picks
Philly- Giroux, Simmonds both late 1st round picks
Vancouver- Sedins
Winnipeg- Wheeler early 1st, Byfuglien 5th

IF we were lucky enough to get the #1 Pick we would most definitely KEEP the pick and take MATTHEWS.
He is a CENTER with quality that we have not seen since SUNDIN was here.
We have lots of Quality Wingers in the pipeline - so I FOR SURE WOULD DRAFT / KEEP AUSTON MATTHEWS.
What a great core of players going forward.

The way I would trade Mathews to Arizona was for every player on the team , nothing less . Mathews is worth more then 3 or 4 players and 3 or 4 Draft Choices don't you think . When do you think the Leafs next chance at #1 choice will.happen , I don't think the leafs are as lucky as the Oilers have been over the last 3 or 4 Drafts .
