Leafs trade Nylander
Tampa trades Killorn, Foote

Killorn is a very good player on a decent contract. Not quite the same level as Nylander, so we get the prospect Foote thrown in, who along with Liljegren would cement our RHD for years.

We may have to take Girard, or more likely, Coburn as a cap dump to make this trade work.

Yes, I understand that trading with Tampa is taboo. They are the enemy. But this is a rumors and discussion site. Just trying to keep it fresh and discuss the merits of the players involved and the benefits to the teams (mainly the Leafs) .

The return would likely have to include a 2nd round pick as well, but not too bad.

Unfortunately, the Leafs will NOT be trading with Tampa Bay.

Nylander doesn’t deserve to be traded to a competitor anyway. He deserves to be traded to a perennial bottom feeding team that will never win the cup. He can be a loser his whole life. A rich loser is still a loser.

LEAFSGM:

Why so harsh? First of all, the agent is the Scum.

But do you really expect him to listen to Shanahan and take a paycut for the good of the team?

He may be only worth 6 mil right now, but what about year 4 onwards when he's racking up points playing with the others? 6 mil a year would be a steal. Leafs know this.

Maybe Matthews should take 10 mil and Marner 8 mil next year. That will save 4 mil a year from their projected salaries. This should get us a pretty good Defenceman. Its all about the cup to us Fans. Right?

@jminn

If Nylander cared about winning and maybe even making HOF, he would be willing to take a pay cut. But is it really even a pay cut? It’s generally agreed he’s not worth $x8. If he’s worried about being underpaid years 5-8, then he can sign a short term deal like Kucherov did and prove he’s worth the big bucks. RIght now, it’s called what you see is what you get. Why should Leafs gamble on Nylander growing into his contract? Why should we overpay for the first half of his contract? If we are overpaying the first half and getting a deal on the second half, does that not mean it evens out overall?

Leafs GM. How does Nylander fit into the Tampa salary cap with both Point and Vasilevskiy (sp? ) coming up for new contracts. Even taking away the nominal contract coming back I fail to see how Tampa could absorb what Nylander wants. Foote I like but this will not happen for cap reasons let alone trading within the division with a playoff rival.

I don't think the Leafs will be gambling on him growing into his contract. He was a top 10 pick. Has back to back 60 point seasons and has the obvious skill to be a top line guy on most teams.

If most think he is worth 6 to 6.5 mil right now and Marner gets 10 mil starting next year, do you not think Nylander will be justified in thinking he should be worth 10 mil in 3-4-5 years. This is why they want an 8 mil AAV and I can't blame him.

I would love if he signed for less but I'm certainly not going to think he's being greedy when 3 of his linemates will be making 10-12mil.

Its probably not even possible to sign all 4 long term anyway so might as well try and trade him for a good D-man. Kapanen will do just fine

I also look at a guy like Bozak, making 5 mil a year. Just to put things into perspective.

Killorn is 4.5+ Coburn 3.5 + cap space 2 = 10M

They don’t have any big names to sign on the forwards and a bunch of old men on the defence who won’t be re-signing for as much as they are currently getting.

If Tampa thinks they could have afforded Karlsson, I’m sure they would find a way to fit Nylander if they really wanted him.

@tacat

Sorry. Not to imply Point isn’t a big name. A very valuable player, he will make a big raise. Tampa bridges him. Vasilevskiy isn’t needing contract for two years. Tampa can figure it out by then i'm sure.

@jminn

Why would Leafs give Marner so much more than Nylander when their stats are almost identical?

@jminn

Bozak is also a center, which is a premium paid position, and only got a three year deal.

I am going off what the experts are saying. Matthews 11-12 mil. Marner 9-10 mil.

And Bozak being a center is irrelevant. He's a third line center and Nylander would probably be 2nd line center on most teams. That is is natural position afterall.

@LeafsGM while their numbers may be close, to me their abilities are not. Marner singlehandedly drove the top PP unit in the league last year, and had his numbers suppressed in the first half of the season being anchored to JVR and Bozak. Both were terrible in their own zone and one-dimensional offensively. Once he had Kadri with him, he produced at around a point per game. Willy had Matthews for nearly two full seasons minus demotions and Matty's injury, plus Hyman to do all the dirty work for him. He was basically coddled. I'll admit Marner was demoted to the 4th early last season, but by the end of the season Bozak/ JVR were the 4th line. JVR was playing less that 14 minutes a night.

In closing, Marner is without question the superior player and well deserving of a higher AAV than Willy.

@MarsBars

You’re answer is by far the most extensive and best answer that could be expected. Along with previous answers I’ve seen you post, I assume you must be a coach? Marner carried JVR and Bozak last year. Now it’s his chance to have a partner of equal caliber, he needs to have a breakout year.

Marner is off to a hot start playing with Tavares. If he hits 80+ points this year, then realistically he does pull in $9-$10M. This is his chance.
