500 k from zaitsev that’s funny that’s equal to 5 cents in your pocket.

@themostleaf33

Is this some kinda joke that is way too much for Montour we already have a bunch of the same type of defencemen.

No it’s not a joke, this is a trade that could happen if Ozhiganov or Holl or even Carrick turn out to be in the starting top 4 in the leafs roster like Mackin was discussing below, something the leafs could do is clear some space off the cap by trading Zaitsev, as Macking said before retaining $500 thousand isn’t that much, and it still keeps our retained salary under 2 mill, which I feel is kind of like the border line.

Neilson and Korshkov won’t crack the NHL in the next 2 or 3 years (if ever that is for Korshkov) so they aren’t worth much
Leivo and Pickard are kind of like depth/ fill in during injury guys so they aren’t worth much.

Zaitsev himself is probably the only decent player other then Neilson in this trade, and he is actually NHL top 4 worthy, so we send him over so the ducks can replace Montour.
I have no problem giving up a late first and a third that won’t be useful for just under 3 years.
This make the leafs better, isn’t that what you all want?
I honestly think I’m not giving up enough for Montour, not too much.

Montour is like the RHD version of Reilly (ok not that good but not far off from that), plus he is young and still developing, the only adjustment that could happen here is Zaitsev no salary retained.

A 6:1 swap. I know you’re thinking is we pay a premium to Anaheim so we can dump a couple contracts (Leivo, Neilson) . I just don’t think it would work. The only NHL player you are giving back is Zaitsev, who is a significant downgrade to Montour.

You are correct in that Montour is a very valuable player. Anaheim is going to be dependent on him to quarterback their defense this year. Only 24 years old, he scored 32 points in his first full year, and is already ranked top 50 in the NHL.

I truly think Anaheim would trade Montour if the price was right. But you got to give to get. A smaller package of higher quality players would be needed here. At least a Kapanen, and/ or Brown to go along with Zaitsev and the 1st.

Montour is very good and only going to get better.

The package you outlined Is just too much. The leafs will not be retaining salary any time soon.

@Matardi

I’m still waiting for that trade proposal you offered. I’m sure it will be a nice safe depth move. At any rate it’s bound to be better than the Andersson trade you offered up last time.

Maybe try something with a little edge to it this time. Go ahead and take a chance, trade someone decent. if it’s a good trade, I will admit it. i'm a fair and impartial judge.

It would be nice if you posted suggested lineups after as well. It’s always nice to see how the incoming players fit the team. Not enough posters include this simple mechanism that helps visualize the possibilities of their proposals.

If I was going to trade for Montour my suggestion would be

Leafs Montour 3rd or 4th

Ducks brown Sandin Gardiner

They would get a good two way forward basically a first and a guy that would be able to replace Montour down the road and Gardiner who can replace Montour now I’d keep our high draft picks for a bigger package either now or at the deadline.

I don’t suggest big trades because I don’t want one to happen. I am very happy with the leafs current roster. You sound like Nonis. You somehow believe that this is the only year that matters and want the leafs to go all in. I don’t. I want there to be meat on the bone so that we can aquire at the deadline for cheap and have cap space open so that bonus’ do not carry over. You also fail to recognize that the leafs will fall upon 5.5 million in free cap once the season starts and Horton is placed on LTIR. You make trades just for the sake of making trades. Mine are calculated and much closer to reality.
