OK leaves us maybe $6M. Upgrades yes. A ton of them no.

7.8M in cap space to upgrade Gauthier, Leivo, Holl, and get a back up goalie. That is less than 2M per player. Time to get real those three players aren't good enough for full time NHL duty and Grundstrom is not a sure fire blue chip prospect. You sell a lot of hopes and dreams, come back to reality. The team you posted is a step backwards from what we currently have.

Marleau has a full no trade clause.

He may waive to spend last year back in San Jose.

Leafs2018

Marleau would waive it to return to San Jose to retire there. Can’t see leafs keeping him the trade free up much needed cash 4 leafs.

My math without marleau

Laefs payroll 43 million

Let’s say big three

26 million

Let’s make kapanan and Johnson

2 million each plus a few 1 million dollar contracts

75 million

Maybe cap climbs to 82 million

Easy to see why Marleau will have to be traded

This thing is going to be tight.

I have my fingers crossed that Marleau wants to go back to San Jose at the end of this year (and will wave his NT clause for it) and that SJ will take him back so that he can retire in teal.
That would solve a lot of the Leafs near term cap problems.
A lot will depend on whether Leafs win the Stanley Cup this year.
If Marleau gets his Cup this year he would probably be happy to retire as a Shark.

I don’t see Marleau or even Hainsey being traded as I’m predicting they will both finish out their contracts while wearing the maple leaf. Toronto wants to be a desirable location for potential free agents and for them to create a desirable destination, they also need to demonstrate how well they treat their own personnel. If we’re already talking about trading Marleau after one season, and they as a team were to think in same way, then free agents would be less likely to sign here. At the end of the day, many UFA players look for term and security when negotiating contracts. If you recall when the Leafs almost traded for filppula, he had rejected the move in part because he didn’t want to be used as trade bait. There are other intangibles that we are not pervy to but hear through the media how the coaching and managerial staff emphasize the importance of having veteran leadership and presence in the locker room. If Leafs are going to challenge for the Stanley cup, then they will need the right balance of youth and veteran players to make that happen.
