Hearing that the penguins are looking into buying out Carl Hagelin. If this is the case:

TOR: Josh Leivo, 2018 fourth
PIT: Carl Hagelin, 2018 second

Carl Hagelin doesn't put up good offensive numbers but that's not what we'd be bringing him in for. He's a VERY good defensive forward and he'd be a great upgrade as a depth forward but also on our PK.

I'd slot Johnsson on our third line LW position, and put Hagelin on our fourth line LW.

I don’t see any problems with this trade. Other than the $4M big ones we would have to pay our fourth line winger for one year, which we can afford. We dump Lievo and upgrade our pick. Gives us a better shot at landing a “diamond in the rough”.

MarquesMen,

I would agree with your assessment of Hagelin bringing some defensive elements to a team. Advanced metrics illustrate his defensive strengths. His advance stats are also opposite to players such as Guentzel. Guentzel is also on the last year of his contract so it will be interesting to see if either of these players remain on the Pens roster after next year. I'm not saying that the Pens are looking to trade either, but their GM is open to making some changes which may necessitate the departures of either.

Hagelin however, would be a very pricey fourth line LW at 4 million. The Leafs do have a lot of cap room, but they will need it to strengthen their roster in multiple ways.

I do believe it's a good even trade, we fill the komarov hole, at a more expensive price but maybe up the 3rd to a second for Pitts to retain a bit of salary might sweeten the pot.

Leafs power play and penelky killers are loaded no match there. Penelty kill Johnson Kapanan brown.

Another post showing Leafs fans being completely out of touch. Guentzel is a star in the making and the Pens would never part with him. He had 13 goals in the playoffs last year and 10 goals in 12! games this year.

This discussion show how out of touch Leafs fans are about other teams. The proposed deal is absolutely absurd.

Hagelin is a very valuable part of the Penguins and they aren't looking to trade him, let alone buy him out. He was absolutely fantastic the second half of last year. His forecheck is among the most disruptive in hockey and he fits great with Malkin. There is more to hockey than goals. I doubt that there is a single Pens fan who would rather lose Hagelin that Sheary who scored 40+ 5x5 goals in the last two years.

Yeah, he is paid a bit too much, but the Pens can afford it. They are in great cap shape to sign their few RFA's. The only scenario where he gets dealt is if they make a big move to acquire an expensive player, and even then they would move Sheary and possibly Sheahan first.

Crozier,

To clarify, my comments regarding Guentzel were simply speculative in that I am curious to see what the Pens organization decides for next season.

I am completely in agreement with you on Guentzel’s offensive contributions. He’s been a playoff beast and a welcomed player to any playoff hockey pool. That being said, he is approaching the end of his 4 million per year contract, and I am curious as to what his asking price will be.

Equally interesting are the Kessel rumours and speculation of him being possible trade bait. Some might argue that Kessel is just as important as the other two Penguins mentioned in this thread, with strong playoff performances.

We can also look at the past and see examples of player trades like Jordan Staal which was in part necessitated by economics. At the end of the day, most teams identify who their core players are and continue to make changes around them.

It’s going to be a fascinating summer for the Pens.
