I'm not sure if the Avs would willingly part with one of their good young defenders (Girard, Barrie, Zadorov) but they may be willing to deal Erik Johnson, and for a lot cheaper.

Martin, Brown and the 25th pick for Johnson and a third? The Avs could use a flyswatter like Martin to support all the young guys they have coming up and with Johnson's cap hit, getting some money going the other way would be beneficial.

LeafsGM zadorov your paying heavy price are you not. I know nothing about this guy but his stats are just average. What's in your mind for this trade.

Terrible terrible Nylander trade. Zadorov is worth far less than Nylander and you wanna add a first? I get that you weren't a fan of Nys playoff performance, but he still has a lot of trade value. he's a two time sixty point man and can be a seventy point man easily in his career.

Mackin

You need to dig deeper. Zadorov is 6’5”, 230lbs. With a whopping 278 hits and over 100 blocked shots, this man is a defense machine. With a +4 rating, he’s on the positive side of +/ - and registered a career best of 7 goals and 20 points last year, which although is average for defensemen, may increase as he is being used in more situations and gains more ice time.

Zadorov is not being brought in for offensive production. He is being brought in to do the things Gardiner couldn’t. Hit, block shots, and clear the front of the net. At $2M he’s cheaper than Gardiner, and even re-signing him, I expect he won’t be commanding more than about $4.5M

The price of Nylander and 1st is steep price to pay, but Zadorov is the real deal. Avs won’t be trading him for cheap.

MarsBars

I too looked at Johnson as possible trade target. His size and stats are good, but he’s older and much more expensive. I decided to go for the younger, cheaper player with more upside potential.

That Nylander trade. Yikes.

You guys obviously haven’t looked at his advanced stats and are only going by headline numbers. If we wanted an offensive defenseman, we could simply keep Gardiner. Zadorov is a huge improvement on the back end. If anything, I don’t think I offered enough. This young man is far from average.

I don't mind the trade. The first is not necessary. Nylander could be an all-star talent for years to come. I would like to keep him

Leafs drafting Rasanen last year was an attempt to find a Zadorov type player. Rasanen is a project that never may never make it. I know this living in Kingston watching him struggle in the OHL. But you never know.

SO a 60 point guy at 21 years old isn't enough? don't play nylanders value down. Making that trade hampers Toronto for years to come. I mean, look at what you said; he’d be affordable, and wouldn't command over 4.5 million. If he isn't commanding a good amount, then he certainly isn't worth a lot. Cause other than overpaid free agents, cap hit usually dictates a 23-30 year olds value. THere are exceptions, such as Kadri or Bergeron, but normally cap hit will dictate how good a plyer is. 4.5 million is not worth nylander and a 1st. that's nearly ekblad/ oel level talent. Not zadorov.

Don't get me wrong Zadorov is a beast and can absolutely truck people over. The Leafs could definitely use him.

For Nylander and a 1st though? I don't see it man. I think Colorado would trip over themselves hurrying to accept that if you offered it.

Yes, Zadorov is a big hitter and an intimidating presence. Yes, he's excellent in his own zone. But his scoring numbers are unlikely to improve that much, since he's not great with the puck. And the Avs will overvalue him and likely command about what you've offered, which is undoubtedly an overpayment. Johnson comes cheaper in terms of assets given up, provides a solid and established two way game, and has ten years of NHL experience as a former #1 OVERALL pick. The cost-benefit on acquiring Johnson is much more in the Leafs favour than a guy like Zadorov. I'd sooner pay what you've offered for Manson or Parayko, two guys who are similar to Zadorov defensively but much more established offensively.

I’d rather have Zadorov than Ekblad and his damaged brain or OEL and his eye-watering +/ -.

$4.5M is just a number I arrived at by comparing 3-4 other players of a similar nature, and then taking a small discount for inexperience. I don’t really know how much he is worth. Nylander is probably going to get about $6M, sonif Zadorov is $5M, then we are in the same ballpark.

Jminn is probably correct in that the first may not be necessary. Nylander alone could probably get the job done.

This trade hardly hampers us for years to come. Lmao. Nylander is good, but far from irreplaceable. Zadorov is a high quality player and would be a significant upgrade on defense over Gardiner.

Edmonton traded Hall for Larsson. Hall is a $6M player, and Larsson is $4M player. Hall is a much better player than Nylander. Pfaneuf makes $7M a year, does that mean LA should have traded Kopitar for him?

Basing trades on contract value alone is pointless. Granted, Edmonton overpaid for Larsson, and Hall really had a knockout year his first year in Jersey, but my point is that if you want to acquire a good defenseman, you have to pay up.

I actually thought the second part of my trade where I bring in Lucic would be the focal point for negativity. Edmonton paid significantly for Larsson, and my attempt to acquire him for Gardiner, while providing cap relief by taking Lucic seems a little weak.
