A deal like this would quite possibly ruin the Leafs going forward with the ability to re-sign and keep all of their young talent. Brown's contract is a franchise killer. IF and that is a big IF the Leafs ever took that contract on and grabbed Doughty in the deal as well, NO WAY we send our 1st too!

The package of JVR, a 1st and Kapanen is enough for Doughty, I'd rather eat the last year of Lupul vs Brown.

Even worse if you send him to the Marlies, that will be $5MM of dead cap space on the Leafs. Give your head a shake bud!

I’m in agreement with this being a bad deal on so many levels. The Leafs do not need to make this kind of trade, especially with the depth of prospects they are accumulating. If the Leafs do get Doughty, it will be through free agency. Brown's albatross of a contract in the deal is more than enough to pass. Sending Brown to the minors wouldn't be a good answer either. Unless this deal could be worked to not include Brown, I wouldn't even consider it.

There should be a Leaf Law in place, “Thou shall Not trade 1st round picks”. Leafs need to keep drafting and developing. Trading that pick away is denying the team another potential blue chip piece for the future.

If Kapanen makes this team and sticks, I think he’s going to surprise many people.

Sending Brown to the AHL would only save something like 900K off the cap. The rest still counts unless he goes to Lupul Island (Robidas has been evicted)

The Doughty rumours are interesting, the Kings are in cap Hell and need a pretty solid rebuild. Doughty is not a guy the Kings would want to part with, so it would have to be a very solid return.

Leafs have a cap crunch coming with the "big 3". BUT. what if they replaced Nylander for Doughty's money? I agree with OP, a 'bad contract' may need to be included as well as other pieces.

Nylander has a ton of value for a team like the Kings!

This team with Marleau and Doughty. cup contenders!
