Why Kapanan and not JVR? Soshnikov sits?

No to trading JVR KOMAROV they are still descent aged and our team can't be filled with too much young guns. Trade BOZAK then move NYLANDER at centre then give Leivo the chance to play.

I'd love to see the Leafs land Montour, but honestly I think it will take a kings ransom to pry him loose.

I'm betting it would take Nylander, that's how high Ducks fans are on Montour.

I love watching Nylander, but knowing how bad the Leafs need to improve their defense I would propose something like this:

Nylander, 2nd

for

Montour, 1st

Leafs turn one of their extra 2nd rd picks into another 1st and use that to draft a high end D prospect.

Montour has all the tools to become a top 4 D very quickly and would flourish under Babcock!

I agree we have too many young rw but kapanen has done even less than montour at the nhl level. With rhd being in such demand these days there's no way this is enough from the leafs. I doubt kapanen plus a first would be enough. Just my opinion.

Leafs already said they are not trading NYLANDER. Did you even see him play against Canes?

Yep, saw him play. What I saw was Nylander raising his value.

Simple math really, you're not going to pluck away a high end D-prospect (RHD as well) unless you give up a kings ransom.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying trade away Nylander for just anything. It has to be what the Leafs mgmt think will be a top 4 D pairing and I feel Montour is just that.

I have a hard time seeing how the Leafs don't make at least 1 trade for a really good young D-man. This rebuild is moving faster than expected, but their Defensive prospect cupboard is very weak outside of Neilson and maybe Dermott. They should continue to draft and develop, but that will take a few years for new prospects. They can try free agency, but they will overpay (as every team does in free agency) and eventually that will become a problem (when all these young superstar rookies need new contracts) .

So, if they don't make at least 1 'hockey trade' how does the current Defense get better anytime soon?

My view of the future Leafs defense:

Reilly TBD
Gardiner Zaitsev
Neilson TBD
Carrick.
