Since leafs are now in a playoff spot, only glaring need seems to be on defence.
Hawks signed panarin to 12mil for 2 years so they will have to move some1 with significant cap to ice depth players, so I think Lou should try take advantage and pry Seabrook from them and for cheap considering his horrible contract (too long+expensive for a 31 year old) .

To leafs:
Brent Seabrook

To hawks:
Polak (to sub in for Seabrook)
Leipsic (fantastic numbers in the ahl, and could be a very good player to the left of towes)
2nd round pick (not a huge loss considering we have so many)

It may take kapanen to get a dman, he's hard to move but I'd package him for a good prime rhd any day.

This is an awful idea, seabrook is an absolute stud but we would be signing a 31 year old at almost 7M a year for 7 more years. How are we going to afford nylander, marner, matthews, Reilly and all the other guys along the way? Terrible idea

Reasons JVR Bozak Komarov need to go let's look 2 years from now entry levels are gone

Mathews 8 million
Marner 7 million
Nylander 5 million
Brown 2.5 million
Hyman 3 million
Kadri 5 million
Reilly 5 million
Zaitov 5 million
Gardener 4 million
Anderson 5 million

That's only 10 guys eating space that's 51 million and those are just a guess add 10 million more to fix defence now we are 61 million

Zaitsev is not getting 5 million

I bet Mathews gets 7.5 more max length

And why would Chicago do that? When they are one of the favourites for the cup? POLAK is just garbage

Zaitsev gets more than gardener don't you think or same maybe 4 million. Point is you can see where leafs cap is heading.

Most contending teams have a large portion of their cap space tied up within their core. The leafs will continue to bring in their young talent on ELC to balance. Lou is really pushing for a 'Team before individuals' attitude so it is even possible our young core won't be very greedy when it comes to signing. A small pay cut is worth playing where you want and winning, especially when that pay cut is still x3 what you've been making previously.

Dear RMCKeen

Take competitive nod this still 2 years away but when Mathews we Chicago sign Panarin to 6. Million for two seasons Mathews will feel he wants more. Circles are already talking Mathews in same sentence as Crosby and McDavid and he is higher side than Eichel for sure.

Depends I see MATTHEWS as a MALKIN 2.0 he could get a similar contract to him

Maybe when he becomes a FA, as a RFA his ceiling for pay will only go so high. Regardless, he will be well laid. As will several other core members. My point is we don't have anything to worry about. Accent players who compliment our core will be developed in house, on entry level contracts. We won't be signing any significant FA unless he's a big RHD named Shattenkirk.

David, you forgot Horton at 5.3M, Martin at 2.5M and Kadri is a deal at only 4.5M.
Even adding a top 4 D-man for 4M (aka Manson, Hamonic) and assuming the cap goes up 3M over the next 2 years (conservative) and their core (top 2 lines, top 4 D-men) locked up the leafs will be in pretty good position. Leaves them about 14M for a third paring, bottom 6 forwards and a backup, most of which will be filled by youngsters on ELC (Liepsic, Kapanen, Neilson, Dermott, Bracco Brooks Desrocher, etc.)
All in all, the future still looks bright.
