OK lots of new developments with these guys so a few thoughts.

Marleau plus bracco to LA for Martinez.

Now I have no idea how far la will go or if there would be any interest or common ground but assume it's possible. Substitute as u wish

Kadri and Zaitsev to Carolina for Pesce: don't care about how this affects Carolina cap, they can figure it out. I like Pesce contract and term.

Here is why:

Top two lines with Johnsson and Marner signed cost 45 million roughly. Top four d roughly $17 million. Goalies and Kessel $7million if no change. Total of $69m

I would like to keep $2million in room. If cap is $83, they have $12 million left

Third line: love to see Kapanen and Moore together. Just think it would work. No idea on centre. Guessing $4million. Might be less

Fourth line: the new Russians? Petan? Again no clue but say $3million.

Leaves $5 million for last 2/ 3 d. Dermott and rosen? Call it $2m

Still need the third line centre.

Kadri a casualty. But 2 nice defenceman for top 4.

Fire away.

Just an add. Muzzin and Martinez contracts due up soon. Gives 1-2 years to develop Liljegren and sandin. Combined with Dermott and Reilly could be a nice young top 4. Add Rosen. A good veteran to guide, costs wouldn't be terrible.

Lots of questions coming though. Kapanen and Johnsson contracts likely 2 years or so. Hyman. There will be $40 million tied up in top 4.

On defence Reilly comes due. Dermott has one more year. Who plays bottom pairing if sandin and Liljegren in top 4

How about a goalie replacement when Andersen due.

Going to be very interesting.

Rosen and Hollowell or Duszak would be my guess for the bottom pairing. Rosen looks ready to make the leap next year. Would love to have him on the team. And Duszak and Hollowell both excelled in their respective leagues this year. Duszak didn’t win the Hoby Baker award, but he finished with just two less points than Makar despite playing five less games. And Hollowell dominates the OHL.

Admittedly he is an older player in that league now, but still got to give credit where due. We have quietly built a real stack of highly effective young players that all look set to make an impact in the big leagues sooner rather than later. This is the most excited I’ve been about the Leafs in a long time.

One of the Winnipeg guys on here said something about getting used to having a cheap defense for the next four years, or something to that effect. I know he meant it as a ‘dis’, but it is accurate and I am more than happy to see these kids come in to the league over the next couple years and give us the flexibility to ice one of the best forward groups in the game.

I don't think they are giving up bracco just yet.

@Leafs1994

Instead of Bracco, what about Brown?

I think if LA can fit it, they would take a prospect or Brown with Marleau for an offset. I doubt Martinez comes back, they will likely try and trade him at the deadline.

It's likely more of a dead weight contract like Lewis.

I believe the leafs will try to get rid of Marleau without giving up their best forward prospect outside the NHL.

Also last I heard Carolina wanted Johnsson or Kapanen with Zaitsev for one of their RHD. I would be ok with that. I don't think they want Kadri though because they already have Necas, Stall, and Aho who can play center.

The point to all this was to point out salary cap restrictions and possibilities. They need 2 good d. Propose another trade or two then. Kadri doesn't fit. He, Zaitsev and Marleau will be gone. Two $4m defencenen will come in. My prediction.
