I can see Tampa getting desperate and try trading his rights to the leafs for a package. At least they would get a little something for there franchise player instead of nothing. Not saying it will happen but it helps leafs shed more money as well. I'd throw LUPUL in a deal for him lol

The ONLY way that the Leafs would ever enter into a trade for Stamkos would be if they were allowed to negotiate a Contract with him first. I would NOT trade anybody for him without his signature on a contract. (This would be to get the jump on negotiations now instead of July when he could deal with anyone)

Most of our high end prospects are forwards: this may be the only way to build a better defence. JVR's will be eventually replaced by Nylander/Marner/Kapanen.

You mean Tyson Barrie. Duchene is neither a defenceman nor a RFA. And Colorado will want a defenceman back in any deal.

canada4ever, great reference to the Lindros trade. The key to that trade was getting Forsberg (a centre)from the Flyers. I'd definitely try to trade the Matthews pick to Arizona, but I'd want Strome, a centre, coming back instead of Domi (plus OEL and their first round pick as well, of course).

I doubt the Leafs want to eat 50% of Phaneuf's salary for this yer and the 5 years. How about this:
To Dallas:
Phaneuf
Robidas (put his $3 million on LTIR)
To Toronto:
Hemsky
Nikushkin
1st round pick 2016
Hemsky's $4 million this year and next year removed from Dallas' cap plus Robidas on LTIR for this year and next year equals Phaneuf's $7 million. After those two years, the increase in the salary cap will allow Dallas to fit in Phaneuf's full salary until the end of his contract without any salary relief from the Leafs (and yes I believe Phanuef is worth this package to Dallas who wants to win a Cup soon).
