Couple of deadline moves to help the defence and solidify the forward depth

Dubas has made it clear he wants a player with term to avoid any foligno situations

One player that's being stuck on the third pair behind the likes of schmidt and pionk who is very consistent and on a great deal is Dylan DeMelo.

Leafs receive;

I’d do the Appleton trade for sure but I’d pass on Demelo.

Yes Demelo has term but is even less of an offensive threat than Holl at $3m per. Don’t see also giving up a 4th makes us any better.

DeMelo is an interesting target. Jets are paying $3M for a guy on their 3rd pair as you mention. Leafs would have to be sure he can play top 4 to make the move. Jets could put Holl on their 3rd pair and save $1M. You likely need more than a 2023 4th added though.
Appleton will likely get at least a 3rd imo. They won't need to add a pick and they could probably get a 3rd in this draft from someone else.

You also added almost $2M to the Leafs cap, which I don't think they have.

Being from Ottawa i know Demelo is good defensively. also a big fan of Appleton. but i think both cost a little more.

I was disappointed when Leafs didn’t pick up DeMelo when San Jose put him on waivers a number of years ago.
I was disappointed when Ottawa made him available in trade and Leafs didn’t move on him allowing the Jets to grab him for a 3rd round pick.
DeMelo is much better than Holl and would look great on Leafs blueline.

Idk much about demelo but I will say engvall over Appleton engvall has better number but the leafs could try and take out simmonds but then we have no toughness in our lineup.
