Given the option what does everything think. Schmidt for a third or Brodie?

Personally I would have traded someone and taken both. A Muzzin-Brodie pairing and Reilly- Schmidt looks like a helluva top 6 to me. Given the chance though, I probably trade for schmidt over signing Brodie. Hitting machine that plays well in his own end? Sign me up.

It’s hard to judge since the Schmidt deal was so last second I feel like the leafs never had a shot.

Agreed Leafs1994 more of just a hypothetical though based on what he went for.

I would say we can’t get Schmidt but why not Hamonic at this point why wouldn’t he take a cheap one year deal I’m honestly trying to figure out why he hasn’t been picked up yet.

We don’t know if the opportunity had ever presented itself. I would assume it must have, as Vegas probably would have preferred not to trade Schmidt to another West coast team is my guess. So they must have at least approached Dubas.

If we took on Schmidt for a pick though, we would have had to dump a significant amount of salary. Which basically would have meant Nylander. Is Schmidt plus a bunch of futures worth it to replace Nylander? I would think so, but hard to say after we already traded Johnsson and Kapanen. The forward depth would have been a lot worse.

Schmidt is ranked 18th for his position. That easily puts him in the top 50 for defensemen. He’s higher rated than Brodie. Significantly higher.

I’m not saying I’d rather have him over Brodie. But having them both on the team sure would have been nice.

Hammonic opted out of the playoff bubble due to his young daughter contracting a lung C.V. a couple years a ago. He didn’t want to risk anything and maybe is waiting to determine how the season will be played before he puts pen to paper.

Yea, the big thing with Schmidt was cap hit. Main reason they only got a 3rd for him. Some teams had already made moves by the time they got Piet signed and didn't have the space to take him on without moving another piece or pieces. I think Vegas didn't want to get caught in a position of trying to hold on for something better and then getting stuck with adding a pick or prospect to a deal just to get someone to take some cap off their hands.
