Dubas drafted him and always liked him a lot.
To Penguins: Robertson ($.875), Kampf (j2.45), Jarnkrok ($2.1) = $5.425M
Tớ Leafs: Bunting ($4.5M)
Robertson can take Buntings place on LW and add to the Pens youth movement.
Dubas signed both Kampf and Jarnkrok to Leaf contracts and obviously liked them.
They would be an upgrade to Penguins bottoms 6.
Bunting would complete the Leafs top 6!
Could the Leafs pry Kaliyev away from Los Angeles for a 2026 - 2nd round pick?
Kaliyev is a left shot who prefers to play the right side.
Kaliyev: age-23, 6'2" - 210Lbs
Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Pacioretty - Domi - Kaliyev
Holmberg - Lorentz - Dewar (all 3 can play center)
Reaves - Cowan - Minten - Grebyonkin - Alex Nylander

Zero chance dubas would move bunting I would put my house on it.

That's a lot to pay for Bunting imo. I think Kampf and Jarnkrok both have some value.
I don't understand trading a 2nd for Kaliyev and not even playing McMann.

Others on this site think that kampf and Jarnkrok have little value
I’m not one of those people.

Kaliyev is a left shot, right wing who would take Jarnkrok’ slot on the 3rd line, right wing.
He is only 23 at 6’2”, 210lbs.
Consequently the 2026 - 2nd round pick.
Kamp and Jarnkrok definitely have value and were also needed to balance the money for Bunting.
Looking at how weak Penguins bottom 6 are, Kampf and Jarnkrok would be serious upgrades.
My mistake, I had forgotten about McMann.
He should slot into the 4th line along with Holmberg, Dewar, Reaves, Lorentz.
I like McMann a lot but he has an extensive injury history with both the Leafs and Marlies and I question whether his body can hold up.

McMann is also a left shot who played RW in the minors quite a bit.
My point on Kaliyev is that he hasn't even come close to potential. He's a good size, yes. But he isn't overly physical. He isn't very good defensively. 5 on 5, his production lacks. He only had 11 EV points last season and 16 the year before. If he wasn't 6'2", he's probably still in the minors. He is like Robertson at the moment.
I said during last season, a Robertson for Kaliyev trade would make sense to me. Still does. No teams want to seem to pay a 2nd for either of these guys at the moment.

I brought up a similar trade a few weeks ago and I still think this is the better trade option for both teams. Where the teams are $$$$ strapped player movement can occur where both sides benefits without impacting the $$$$. Dubas knows what he is getting in these players and the Leafs know what they are getting in Bunting. The other benefit for the Leafs to do this is it creates space other players. There will however need to be another trade to create the $$$$ space required to facilitate this move. This move could be one for a 3rd C who knows.
