Are leafs better than Tampa now. Lightning have better defence how do you size up leafs and Tampa.

Signing Tavares certainly makes us more competitive than we were last year, and almost definitely gives us the best trio at the Center position in the entire league.

Are we better than Tampa? That’s questionable. While our forward depth is at least equal to Tampa’s, Tampa still has the more experienced team up front, and in my opinion Tampa has the better defense and goaltending.

What Tampa has that Leafs need is that one final piece, a Norris Trophy winning defenseman. I was really hoping Doughty would hit the market, but I guess you were right all along. Doughty ain’t going anywhere (you can say “I told you so” now) .

Leafs defense was good enough for 12th least goals against last year. It’s not that bad really. But with gardiner and Hainsey set to hit the market next year, Leafs are faced with a dilemma. Unless you really think Liljegren and Dermott are ready for top 4 duties very soon, we have a couple holes needing to be filled still on the back end.

Leafs don’t have dough for that type defencemen. Now they bring in a second tier guy 7 million defencemen they have to move out nylander. This year they can bring in someone without moving nylander but next year he has to go.

I think I agree with you on that one David. Nylander is our best trading chip and quickest route to a top pairing RHD. There’s about a half dozen or so guys that I would be willing to trade Nylander for: Dumba, Manson, Subban, Ristolainen, Parayko. All these guys come to mind right off the top of my head.

I do believe Lou was GM of Leafs when they bottomed in 2016 with 69 points. That was only two years ago and we are already talking about winning the cup.

Lou is a very good GM. We were very lucky we were able to poach Tavares from him. And we should be thanking him for turning Leafs team around so fast that Tavares actually wanted to come here and play.

I don't know if the Leafs do make a move for D this year. With Carrick and Ozhiganov under contract, Holl likely to sign relatively soon and the addition of Jordan Subban, an AHL All-Star from last year, they have plenty of pieces to fill the bottom pairing RD spot. I don't think anyone would disagree that whoever wins that fatal four-way will at the very least be an improvement over Polak. If they make a move, they'll have to give up a lot in current roster talent or futures, and it would have to be an improvement over Zaitsev or Hainsey for it to make sense. I wouldn't be shocked if they rolled with the same top 4 as last year and rotated at RD similar to what we saw last year with Rosen, Borgman and eventually Dermott.
