*Chicago wants one more kick at the can and this gives them a couple players to really increase their odds. Kieth is still a stud and has got to better than Gardiner defensively. He had a bad year (as all Chicago did), and that gives Leafs an opportunity to bring him in. Expect a bounce back on a better Leafs team this year. As his sweet deal of a contract winds down over next few years, he drops to 3RHD, or is traded, and Dermott moves to 2RHD. Gives plenty of time for Dermott to fully develop and be mentored by one of the best in the game.

*Liljegren probably makes the team next year 3RHD. Similar to Keith/ Dermott situation, eventually Liljegren creeps up and takes the 1RHD in a year or two and Hainsey drops down. If we have to sign Hainsey for another year until Liljegren is ready, that can be done. Gives plenty of time for Liljegren to come into his own and become a real star.

*Not overly sold on the Detroit deal (its all in good fun, you guys will criticize it and make suggestions to improve), but we don’t lose anything off the roster, and we bring in Larkin, who instantly makes our third line a real threat and probably fastest line in the league. Svechnikov has enormous potential and is a big kid that may really turn out to be the steal in this trade. A rebuilding Detroit gets three more first round picks to make five total.

Not sure Keith is a good fit for that price. He is 34 signed for another 5 years.

You know what this trade is good, the only thing I would change is that I would want Gustafson instead of Kieth from Chicago and then we could possibly also get Duclair
If we are putting Keith in second D pairing anyway, may as well get younger d who can play there as well for a price that is way lower than Keith’s
Otherwise this is a good trade.

Keith is on a sweet contract, which is why I targeted him. It was designed for him to be traded in the final years of the contract, and his base salary starts dropping steeply this year on. If worse comes to worse, we can buy him out after a year or two. The guy is still phenomenal. He came 4th in Norris voting 2106-2017. Last year was really the first let down of his career, and it’s hard to point the finger at him when the entire team did so poorly. It’s a helluva good contract, and Leafs could do a lot worse than pursue Keith. Athletes of his caliber play a lot longer these days, and I can easily see Keith playing until 40.

I'd personally try and stay away from Nylander and the 8th overall. I'd try making that deal without those main pieces. If Oliver Wahlstrom is available at that time, I'd think about this trade. I personally think Keith would be a good addition to this team.
