What I'd love to see

Leafs trade Brown, McElhinney, Martin, 2nd rd pick
Avs trade Erik Johnson, 4th rd pick

The Avs could use a competent backup (Bernie lost them the Preds series when Varlamov went down) and some gritty wingers to help them compete in the gritty West.

Erik Johnson is a legit top pairing RHD with size, two-way ability and he provides experience and leadership (ten-year career and wears the A on his chest).

Sign Tavares at 8yrs, 10M

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Marleau-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Kadri-Kapanen
Grundstrom-Aaltonen-Leivo
Lindholm, T.Moore

Reilly-Johnson
Gardiner-Hainsey
Dermott-Zaitsev

Sorry that 2nd rd pick should have been a first. Or an added prospect like Timashov, Bracco or Moore.

Erik Johnson for Brown+ Leivo+ McElhinney+ Carrick.

Martin is not a value player.

Just trade Martin for a 6th round pick to the Islanders.

Tavares for 8 yrs 10 MM is possible under a $80 MM CAP.

Think Marleau should play with Kadri with Johnsson with Tavares.

Just don't know who replaces Leivo who was included in the trade.

The problem occurs in 2020, the last year of Marleau, as based on your line-up, the Leafs expenditure would be $81.80 MM, WHICH is slightly under the cap including the Kessel charge.

Not enough for Johnson and why would Avs want to trade him?

You forgot to mention what you are trading in order to sign Tavares to an 8 year deal.

Colorado has several really talented defensive players and prospects who will eventually need contracts. Zadorov and Girard in the very near future, and Makar and Timmons are both really good looking prospects. I think they'll be forced to move Johnson in the next couple years anyway, so they may be inclined to do it sooner than later.

I appreciate your cap analysis. Down the road someone would definitely have to be moved to accommodate the cap, and in a year who knows who that would be. I would wager a winger, since it's easier to acquire depth wingers than depth centres or defensemen. Maybe Nylander for a big haul of picks and prospects if Kapanen and Johnsson continue to improve, especially if Nylander has hit his ceiling. I know he's very young, and maybe he just didn't take advantage of the off-season this year, but he showed zero development from last year and his playing style as it stands right now doesn't jive with a Babcock team.

As far as filling the fourth line, I doubt Babs would be opposed to playing one of Lindholm or Aaltonen on the wing. He's shown that he loves to play centres on the wing.

I don't think it's necessary to trade anyone this year to accommodate Tavares, but as I stated above, it would be an inevitability down the road.

I think it's way too much for Johnson.

In order to sign Tavares to 8 years you need to trade for his rights. If not the contract is 7 years max.

Ahhh ok then we'll call it 7 yrs 10M. Trading for rights seems like a waste.
