RANDY

Karlsson grab puck last game in Ottawa he is done there and he knows it . Other two r staying where they are.

Karlsson will want to be highest paid defencemen in league. I don't think he fits Toronto it would be tough leafs pay Karlsson more that Matthews. This summer I have Matthews slotted at 10.5 million.

If Leafs wait til next offseason maybe it's 12.5 million as next year if healthy Matthews pots more than 50 goals.
Marner would easily go from 7 million as I see him slotted to 9 million if he gets 90 points next year.

So what do you pay Karlsson on extension after next season Randy? Can you sign Karlsson 10 million next year and are u willing to sign him 8 years?

You have to remember though Toronto has some of the best asveetising money to be had, that's a selling feature such a huge hockey market there's other ways to make money for high end pros in toronto, you tend to have a very negative view on any proposals that are not your own.

Id sign karlson 10 mil 8 years top heavy but no ntc so a team can get him 4 or 5 million actual salary in 5 or 6 years if we have to move him if we wi 3 cups in the next 6 years having sone bad years at the end of his contract doesn't seem that bad does it.

Karlsson: 9G, 62pts, -25, 58Hts, 120Blk, 55Tk, 106Gv
Gardiner: 5G, 52pts, +9, 51Hts, 103Blk, 39Tks, 105Gc

Gardiner is having a very good year. Over the last two years, Gardiner has gotten better and better, while Karlsson has gotten worse.

Gardiner is the poor man’s Karlsson. He’s going to be at least $5M less. Who would you rather have, Gardiner @ $6.5M or Karlsson @ $10.5M? .

@LeafsGM

Excellent comparison, and I believe you were making a similar one to OEL when denouncing any trades for him. The Leafs need a big two-way defenseman, not more of the same.

Though Randy wasn't singling out Karlsson in his initial proposition, he tossed around a few names. I'd rather snag the rights to Doughty if nothing big happens this off-season.

Doughty: 10G, 60pts, +23, 127Hts, 128Blk, 17Tks, 79Gv

Doughty is a better player than both Gardiner and Karlsson. Unlike Karlsson, Doughty’s stats held up well this year. In fact, his numbers this year were just as good as, if not better than, his stats from his Norris winning year. Doughty wants to win. He has cup pedigree, perrenial Norris Trophy candidate, he logs almost 30:00 minutes a night ice time, is used in all situations, This is a guy that is worth $12M a year 8 years, and may be the only defenseman in the league right now to command that kind of money.

I think Leafs will take a wait and prove it approach this year before they decide who to extend an offer too, and that includes their own Jake Gardiner, who like I said, has given himself the chance to receive a big payday next year. Whether it’s from the Leafs or not yet remains to be seen.

Your right again Karlsson will cost leafs tons of assets and at 10 million your telling Reilly this guy is twice as good as you are. Leafs have been fighting their defenceman tooth and nail on salary.

Karlsson turns 28 in may I don't think this is fit for Leafs. Toronto can swing to the fences on John Carlson and hope it works out. If it doesn't look a lower tier someone to fill that role. Justin fault, mike stone Calgary or Tanev

Randy

Doughty is pretty happy living in LA LA Land don't think he will want to leave that environment. Leafs just need to be patient no big ticket items back there please. We will know something when Babcock has his end of season press conversation when leafs get ellinanated let's just see how playoffs go and we cross our fingers.

All these guys knocking Gardiner cause of his giveaways, but in this category his numbers are comparable to Karlsson, Burns, Carlson, Subban, just to name a few.

All the best offensive defensemen have high turnover rates because a lot of times, especially late in a game we are losing, they will be looking to make that breakout pass to a rushing forward hoping for an odd man rush. They get caught trying to make that stretch pass and turnover happens.
