Pacioretty and Doughty require waaaay more to acquire. And we're not getting nearly enough for JVR.

Seems about right. Doughty and Gards are both UFA.

Add in another draft pick (2nd) or prospect and Doughty deal looks good.

JVR should garner slightly more as well.

Think the Leafs have enough veterans on their team, although Doughty would look great in a Leafs jersey and without a doubt make them an instant favorite serious cup contender, but at Drew's age, which is not old by many standards and the amount of money he will want and get by many teams, may be counter-productive in couple-three years?

Build within and stay younger, complemented with veterans that won, t cripple the buds long-term.

First of all, Doughty is not a UFA until after next season, so why would LA trade him when they are fighting for a playoff spot?

Pacioretty and Doughty would not require more assets/ picks to secure. These trades are fair to each team without resorting to one team being fleeced over the other. Sure it would be great to get more out of the Sharks deal, but GM's are much more cautious to relinquish more assets for a player who may not stay with there organization.

From a long-term perspective, these trades won't cripple the Leafs progress or cap situations if managed properly by slotting young assets into the one up. If anything it shows that they are getting more competitive to play against by taking chances. Don't believe me? Look at David Poile and what he has done with the Predators in past few years to make them more competitive.

Leafs are playing fine, still lots of hockey to play; considering where they are in the standings. Leafs do need to negotiate their assets for instant gratification. Leafs have sucked for a long time and if they make it to the playoffs this year, Leaf fans will be tasting the surface of consistency for the first time in a long time.
