Franson is UFA.

Even if Franson were not a UFA, I wouldn't do this trade.

Have people forgotten when this guy was a Leaf?

Both Nashville and Buffalo have moved on from this guy with neither team offering anything long term. This includes Nashville who drafted then traded and re-acquired him again.

Not a single team in the entire league has offered him a contract. It is well known that parts of his game, in particular lateral mobility are a concern.

He's on a PTO which may or may not lead to a contract. That's pretty telling of where he's at.

If you ever read this post Tanner, give your head a shake!

Marc Bergevin trying to make deals for the Leafs.

Just remember that Franson and Santorelli (throw in) got us a 1st, Leipsic, and Joke In In (who got us Joke i'm Lindstrom - who? ) .

Try doing that with Leivo and Marchenko.

You need to consider the circumstances when mentioning that trade.
First, Santorelli played very well in Toronto after a couple of subpar seasons with other teams including a stint in Europe. Playing in a big market like Toronto gave him a lot of exposure. Some might say he overachieved a little as he didn’t produce the same way after being traded to Nashville. Nashville didn’t resign him either.

Franson on the other hand, still had that top 4D potential which has slowly eroded over time with stops in Nashville and then Buffalo. The fact that he’s struggling to get signed by a team shows how low his value has dropped.

This was a great trade for the Leafs then, but the market has further shifted since, making a repeat of something like this, less likely. Again, who knows what could happen at the trade deadline. Desperate teams sometimes do desperate things. We may see one of the Leaf players go for more than we anticipated or could hope for.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Franson and Santorelli were more established in the NHL as regulars with several full seasons under their belt. These two, Leivo and Marchenko are still trying to find their way into the league full time. Marchenko was picked up on waivers if I remember correctly, which means, his value wasn’t and still isn’t very high.

Nashville overpaid to get him, and the Leafs were happy with the 1st. Santorelli had his 4th line draw taking talents, but that's all he ever contributed.

Too bad about Leipsic and the expn draft; but the 1st also got us Bracco, Dzierkals, and Dermott in trade downs.

Buffalo was in decline when Franson got there.

You failed to say what you could get for Marchenko and Leivo.

The Leafs could sign Franson, but he will be wanting a raise and term; something the Leafs or other teams will not do.

Franson will sign for a light deal with a team before or just after the start of the season or risk not playing. That's when the Leafs should sign him as a replacement for Polak as 7th Dman.
