Curious to get some opinions. After the Leafs extend Brown and Hyman and get a back up goalie (Johnson,1.8M, Nilssen,1.2M?) they are not going to have much wiggle room under the cap because of the huge bonus hit(damn rookies).
Do you think two 2nd round picks(2018 + 2019) and a prospect(Timashov?) is enough to move Hortons contract to a cap floor team like Canes, Yotes, Avs or Vegas? Columbus paid a 1st and a 2nd to move Clarkson but that included expansion draft protection. Same for the Islanders. Thoughts?

I could definitely be wrong about this, but I think that the Horton contract doesn't affect the cap once the season starts because he will be on LTIR.

Bleedblue is correct. It shows up as a contract against the cap now. But you need to move that money to the LTIR when the season starts. It's the dead money that does hurt the Leafs this season, but glad none of the big 3 are making significant money yet.

No one is going to trade for Horton as his contract is not insured. It was the reason we were able to unload David Clarkson. Leafs could afford the hit, Columbus could not and at the time, at least Clarkson was able to play.

It was the cash strapped Jackets that initiated the deal and the Leafs that were financially able to eat the uninsured contract and extremely happy to unload one of the worst contracts in the history of the franchise.

There are other teams that can do the same, like NYR for one; or other teams that need to reach the cap floor on a regular basis (Carolina, and now Vegas) .

The insurance angle only comes into play for the poor teams. And it's only 5.3M cough, cough.
