just an idea. There are only a few ways to get a top pairing dman in the nhl now it seems, draft or find a team that has a few so here's my idea.
Jvr and kapanen for lindholm and Manson. Both are taking from positions or strength.
Literally a thought I e had. Who adds?

That pairing for Anaheim was one of the best in the NHL. I don't see them moving out 2 defensemen that were so impactful for them last year.

I think the leafs would have to add defenseman as this trade would weaken the Ducks d core too much.

You are probably right. It just sucks being in the position of have filled the cupboard full of forwards yet finding good to great dmen is harder and harder. Maybe patience is what I am lacking.

In that we agree. If I were GM I would have looked at taking a Dman with the Marner pick as I'm a big believer that defensemen need to be the first category to address in a rebuild. In saying that, I'm not upset with having Marner as he is a talented player but D take longer to develop in the NHL so its just a path I would have preferred.

Marner was the correct pick, he was the bpa (best player availible), he's a player you can easily use to draw hype (like he has done), and he is a solid 2 way winger. The leafs need to look for some NHL ready Dmen in the draft (easier said than done, I know). But I feel as the next couple of top draft picks from the leafs will all be Defenders

Mike97 I agree Marner was probably the most skilled player at that pick which is why i'm not upset with it but looking at the long term those forwards may be producing to no avail when we can't keep the puck out of our net.

Hopefully I'm wrong but you also said leafs will be picking defenders next couple drafts, what if the bpa is a forward again? See the dilemma?

I'm just saying Hanifin or Provorov would have been my personal route not that its for sure the right one

@Bettsy - yeah, patience is key here. They've taken huge steps, but this upcoming season is still likely to be a bottom 10 finish. An ANA-TOR trade of a forward like JVR for a top 4 Dman is probable this year, but not until the trade deadline, or if ANA plays terribly for a stretch (thanks Randy!). As for your proposal, it's just a bit greedy. Pick Manson OR Lindholm, and adjust the leafs pieces accordingly.

@ the rest of ya - Marner was the right choice. Drafting Dmen is of course ideal, but great Dmen can be had if you have the right deal at the right time (like the theft of Hamilton by CAL). Having a glut of talented forwards gives you the right deal. Trust this management group. They've done pretty much everything right so far in terms of laying the foundation for a great team over the next decade. They'll find us that top 2 Dman when the time is right.

Lindholm is still unsigned and may be available. Ducks need more scoring up front so a JVR for Lindholm scenario might make sense. As for the Marner pick it was the best LT choice. Hopefully this year we win a high pick again in the lottery and go after Liljegren. Looks good so far.
