Haven’t been on this for a while. Thought I’d restart:

To the leafs: Anderson and lindholm

To Calgary: 1st 23 (BOS), nylander, Robertson and liligren

To Anaheim: Matthews
To Toronto: pick 2, mctavish and drysdale

To San Jose: Marner
To Toronto: pick 4, 26, knazoyv (sp? )

All just thoughts bouncing around in my head. Wondering what you guys think. In no way am I thinking all three happen, wondering if any are likely.

Trade one I like, not sure you’d need Lily and Robertson. I’d want permission to speak to lindholm about an extension.

Trade two is the exact type of deal I’d like to see made with the ducks for Matthews or Marner. Depending on if it’s a sign and trade with Matthews you’d possibly even get more.

Trade 3…meh lol don’t hate it don’t love it.

2.) 03 Jun 2023 00:22:02
Can’t see Calgary giving up their best forward and best defenseman for Nylander and scraps.

Anaheim would have to be insane to make such a trade and that is something Pat Verbeek is not!

San Jose’s #4 pick for Marner is equally crazy.
There is a big drop off after Bedard and Fantilli.
None of the remaining players are ever likely to be anywhere near as good as Marner.

Fellas I’m wondering what the appetite here would be for a mini rebuild. I don’t mean trading Tavares etc but maybe dumping ufas for picks and prospects and possible a forward under contract? I’m a firm believer that if you are not good enough to win the cup why keep the team together like it is.
My idea would be dumping ufas for the aforementioned picks and prospect and then maybe move nylander for d and picks.

To Anaheim: nylander
To Toronto: Manson 1st 2020

I really hate the idea of trading nylander. I really think he is polarizing but man is he good. That said, unless the leafs move a bit contract. he will always be the odd man out to get a dman. They can’t afford to move kap ( he’s one of two guys that hit/ forcheck) and they don’t have the nuts for a major shakeup so, to me, nylander makes the list sense.
The Manson idea is just off the top of my head.

Am I the o ou one who thinks this team will be first or second round fodder again as they currently stand?

I would say it leave to big of a hole in our lineup our top 6 is good I’d say we need to perfect our bottom 6 and our blue line plus I don’t think you will get Anaheim’s 1st the will probably be a top10 pick.

2.) 06 Jan 2020 21:55:46
Love manson but not at the expense of nylander. this seems more of a johnsson for manson straight up kind of deal.

3.) 06 Jan 2020 21:57:37
Maybe if it is a protected top 5 pick.

4.) 06 Jan 2020 22:43:36
Since Keefe took over Leafs are looking like a cup contender. Best team in the league. And Nylander’s play this year is outstanding. He’s worth far more than Manson and a 1st. unless it’s too 3 pick. Even then, I’d probably rather go with the site thing in Nylander than run the risk that Lafreniere works out to be as good as Nylander. You pick a guy top 5 in hopes he turns out as good as nylander.

5.) 07 Jan 2020 01:07:21
Bettsy this is the most ridiculous trade I’ve seen in a long time
Leafs are playing like one of the best teams and tkubsant to rebuild?
Dumping nylander for Manson - have you been watching his play last 60 days. c'mon man this is out of this world nonsensical.

To it’s simple. Do you trade bracco for a goalie like Georgiev or do you package him for a bigger piece - like a dman who will play more now from some other team looking to rebuild broadly.

6.) 07 Jan 2020 12:33:52
Oh as I said, I was only using the deal as an example. I think the leafs need Manson more than they need nylander. I love willy but I’m not blind to the fact that when he is outside the offensive zone he plays at %20 speed. Toronto will be a playoff team. Toronto doesn’t have the leadership (group) or the balls to win more than one playoff series. They are a team of amazingly talented offensive players with zero toughness. I don’t need guys fighting every second game but I want to see the team I love not wilt when they get pounded through the boards by a team. That’s where the leafs are and have been for the past three years.
I love the leafs, love Tavares, Reilly etc. But this team is poorly constructed by a GM who values speed over all else. A coach (now) who values speed over any toughness. I hope I’m wrong but this will continue year after year. While constructed differently, we are no different than the leafs of the 2000s. Super talented but always missing something major yet all the media will talk about how amazing they are, building them up to be some great team and then they will falter come playoff time.

Am I right here or is it maybe that night shift messed me up? I don’t mind voicing my opinion here only to figure out I’m wrong lol.

Just curious, how would everyone feel about a retool this season? Not a full blown rebuild but just a retool. Bring up some young guys and get some picks for what should be a really great draft. My ideas:

To Toronto: simmonds and a second
To NJ: johnsson

To Arizona: muzzin
To Toronto: crouse and a first

To Florida: Barrie
To Toronto: first and Tippett

To Edmonton: kap
To Toronto: first and benning

All these players can have their minutes taken by young guys. We would be taking a big step back this year but we could refocus with a bit more cap wiggle room next year

If we wanted to go crazy. and I’m not advocating for this.
To NJ: Anderson
To Toronto: Blackwood, a first and a second/ prospect

Really I just finished night shifts so my brain is two steps behind everything else. tear away boys.

Let’s see: in order: Toronto says no, Toronto says no, Florida definitely says no, and finally, Toronto says no.

Simmonds is UFA and not doing well. He definitely does not make up for Johnsson m, and the 2nd won’t help us contend now.

Crouse is a 4th line bust. I like the thought of Arizona’s 1st if they were tanking again, but right now are a respectable team. It won’t be a lottery pick.

Tippett and 1st for pending UFA Barrie is never going to happen. Besides, Florida has a good defense already. Barrie brings nothing to the party they don’t already have.

Kapanen for a 1st and Benning is no go either. Benning is a bottom pairing defenseman we have enough of those types already. Again, if Edmonton was in their usual place near bottom of the league, it wouldn’t be bad. But it’s not looking like it will be a lottery pick, so I don’t think it’s worth it.

These deals leave us weaker imo. You said retool/ reset, so I see why you are trading roster players, some of whom are very good players, for picks/ prospects, but I don’t think the return is favourable enough for what you are sending out to make Dubas consider doing it all. Johnsson and Kapanen I feel are worth more because they are both capable of top 6 play, 20g/ 40pts. I wouldn’t part with them without something more guaranteed coming back to help us now.

2.) 09 Dec 2019 02:09:21
If it was a re tool them losing Kapanen and Johnson doesn't help. They are both fairly young and cheap. Other than that LeafsGm summed that up pretty well lol.

Without looking at the salary cap, what does everyone think of doing a deal with Calgary

To Calgary: nylander, johnsson
To Toronto: tkachuk, frolik

Calgary gets much needed scoring depth and Toronto gets someone who can muck around. Frolik is gone (I believe) at the end of this year. Kind of tough figuring out the value here because frolik has negative value right now and Calgary fans (I live in Calgary) would have a meltdown. That saying, Calgary needs guys that can score.

Bettsy

1.) 18 Nov 2019 13:54:37
I would bring up Korshkov, Archibald and Sandin and demote Timashov, Shore, and somebody else- Arch is what the leafs need right now, Korshkov is tearing up and Sandin is better than Ceci by a mile.

2.) 18 Nov 2019 15:15:07
Power forwards like ktchuck that can score are rare. I don't see Calgary trading him for a softer nylander.

3.) 18 Nov 2019 16:18:36
For once redwing and I agree lol.

4.) 18 Nov 2019 16:32:27
One-for-one Calgary wouldn’t do it, but the addition of Johnsson makes this deal a winner. There’s no doubting Tkachuk is the better overall player, but he’s not leaps ahead of Nylander. Tkachuk is tier 2 player, while Nylander is tier 3, as is Johnsson. Frolik is garbage.

Calgary might say no, but Leafs definitely say no.

5.) 18 Nov 2019 17:57:08
Great trade for the Leafs, not for the Flames. Marner for Tkachuk seems more fair to me, . maybe Marner and Johnson for Tkachuk and R Anderson.

6.) 18 Nov 2019 17:56:06
1 for 1 no. Adding Johnson would not move the needle in favor of toronto. There just is not a reason to move him. Especially for baby skin soft nylander when calgary has to play in the west with the big boys.

7.) 18 Nov 2019 19:54:03
Calgary probably passes just because tkachuk is the new face of a power forward.

8.) 18 Nov 2019 22:49:20
Calgary isn’t very strong in Wing. They have Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm. After that the skill level drops significantly. Nylander and Johnsson give them a full second line. Tkachuk is currently second line too btw, and Nylander and Johnsson both can play top line obviously. So they really round out the top 4.

Tkachuk is obviously the better player, and I can easily see Calgary turn this down. But the value is there, and I can easily see Leafs turning it down too. I suppose if one of Calgary’s top line players gets hurt bad and goes down indefinitely they would do this. Desperate times call fire desperate measures.

I like sitting back and seeing how the team unfolds during the first bit of the season. Anyone have any observations?
My main observation, which is the same thing i (and a lot of you) have harped on for a few seasons now is this team is spineless. We have seen it over the past few games. What can they do to fix that? They’ve given up all their toughness over the past few seasons and we are now left with a team of pansies that will be first round fodder for whoever they play.

This is the position dubas has us in now. It’s not as simple as making a trade anymore, there isn’t enough cap space out there to make a trade. Is there a lateral move to be had? I doubt Washington trades Wilson for nylander or something like that! It is soul sucking to watch the leafs be pushed around.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry. really needed to vent on this.

Bettsy

1.) 28 Oct 2019 16:40:07
Disagree that's the only issue. Same as goaltending isn't. I said from the start Barrie fixes nothing defensively and he didn't. The main issue isn't the spineless play it's the lazy play. No one wants to fight for the puck they all want to skate around looking at each other in their own zone. It needs to be instilled in the big 3 that they need to play well without the puck as well as with it or this team goes no where. Think bergeron and Barkov not ovechkin and bure.

2.) 29 Oct 2019 08:43:57
Leafslife, Let Bettsy vent, I agree with what is said, keep up the good work.

10 Sep 2019 16:03:00
Everyone seems so keen on giving up on kap I don’t understand it. I love the kid. If we were to him. I’d move him to the isles for Dobson. I really don’t see the isles doing the deal but still.

Bettsy

1.) 10 Sep 2019 18:02:34
I like Kapanen and would have no issue keeping him. It's more that if he plays 3rd line with Kerfoot all year instead of second line with Mathews you may see a drop off in production. His value at the moment may be as high as it gets and their are a lot of guys playing RW that may be able to fill in a 3RW spot.

2.) 13 Sep 2019 14:49:06
It all depends on Marner. With Marner and Nylander in the lineup, Kappy becomes expendable. Without Marner, Kappy has more value to the Leafs than anyone they would get in a trade.

03 Jul 2019 15:14:44
Anyone have an appetite for/ think we can resign marner AND somehow sign ferland? I love the addition of harpur as a 6/ 7 dman but adding someone like ferland to help a lot.

Bettsy

1.) 04 Jul 2019 05:03:36
That's who I want.

2.) 07 Jul 2019 05:06:37
Why do you like him so much? Average player at best and prone to injury, particularly concussions lately. I don’t think Leafs would be willing to give $3M for him.

28 Jun 2019 00:47:20
Anyone else think we should take a run at Richie and Hutton? Maybe throw in boulieau as a bottom pair dman? At least it wild give us some size/ grit.

Bettsy

1.) 28 Jun 2019 18:49:29
Idk I think if Liljegren is ready by camp and really impresses he will make the leafs they got to be smart with their money now if marner signs the 2 year deal at 8 mil it would allow us to possibly add some pieces.

27 Jun 2019 16:03:40
Question: Am I the only one that thinks the leafs would be in a better position if they traded Matthews as opposed to marner? I don’t mind being wrong and I do have a well known sustain for building around American players but still.

I would rather do this
Matthews to Arizona (obvious destination), petan, zeitzev (sp? )
Chychryn, crowse, A prospect and picks

Again, I am wrong to be bias and have no issues being wrong.

I just think with Jonny and kadri our C position is strong. This gives us cap flexibility to add plus it give us picks to use to draft or use as currency. Also, I still believe Arizona will give a stake in the team to get their hometown boy.

Bettsy

1.) 28 Jun 2019 18:53:33
I’d say no Matthews is a franchise center which don’t come around often he has had injury issues the last two years but he’s still put up good numbers the fact is star wingers come and go in the nhl marner is replaceable plus Arizona some how has not cap space so the couldn’t afford Matthews anyways.

Considering years left and price, kadri is more of a aaary dump there.
What about Weeger and wolf for nylander and a pick or nylander and Robertson?

While I agree they need to go into sell mode I think they need picks and prospects back. That said, I love the idea of picking up a Jenner or Anderson in a deal. Beef up at spots and try to rebuild the pipeline.

I love it. I love the thought at least. I think a retool would make the leafs better, balance them out more I guess. I fully supper getting some more youth (at needed positions defensive dman etc) and picks. I think that could be done by moving out expiring deals though. Like muzzin (try and resign of coarse) Barrie etc.
