So word is CBJ is trying to trade for the top pick and the price tag will be very steep this is a rough idea of what I was thinking

To Toronto :
Seth Jones
Brandon Sadd
3rd overall
4th round

To Columbus:
Gardiner
1st overall
JVR
3rd round

(Now Toronto can trade the 3rd pick down in the top 10 for an asset and take a defensemem )

Not a chance. You draft your Center for the next 15 years

You do realize Seth Jones is going to be a lot better than gardiner at 4 years younger too and Sadd is better than JVR and can score 30 goals too and he's younger

Jones may be better than Gardiner, and but Saad isn't better than JVR right now. And the point is, you don't tank all year and win the right to take Matthews for an even trade. You just don't trade him. The only way the Leafs would move him would be for something completely ridiculous that the league probably wouldn't allow a team to do.

JVR is a 60 pt player 4 years in a row if you extrapolate the 2 shorter seasons. Saad, while 4 years younger and more expensive has not delivered quite as much on much better teams.

Seth is or at least will be better than Gardiner but not by a whole lot. He hasn't matched him in points, but that will happen in a year or two.

There's no comparison to the #1 for the #3, and the Leafs need for a center is paramount.

So no, Toronto loses on this deal, even though the younger players would fit with their rebuild.
