Leafs aquire Mascherin and 2019 3rd

Stars aquire Marleau (2 mill retained)

Dallas looking for scoring and Marleau fits that bill. He also plays their heavy style and would fit in well right away. Obviously contingent on Marleau waiving his NMC. Leafs clear 4.25 off cap

Leafs aquire Ferland (signed 3x 4.5-5) and Pesce

Hurricanes aquire Nylander, Zaitsev and 3rd

Good trade for both teams. Canes get the best player and can replace Pesce with Zaitsev down the line up. They improve at forward.

Leafs distribute their excessive amount of talent at RW through out their two weakest positions (LW and RD). The 3rd is a 'sorry for the contract' on Zaitsev. Not a bad hockey player just a million or so over paid.

Ferland-Matthews-Kapanen
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Kadri-Brown
Lindholm- 🐐- Ennis

Rielly-Pesce
Muzzin- Gardiner
Dermott- Hainsey

This leaves the leafs with 5.5-6 of additional cap room from before the trades to continue to improve the team. Can spend most of that this year on a rental (Panarin) and keep the cap open for next year.

Leafs Panarin

Columbus Bracco, Joseph Woll, 2020 1st

Most people are going to say that's not enough to land Panarin. I disagree - I don't think he's going to fetch what people think. He's UFA and unwilling to talk contract until summer. I doubt anyone gambles more than that on him.

Panarin-Matthews-Kapanen
Hyman-Tavares-Matthews
Ferland-Kadri-Brown
Johnsson-Lindholm-Ennis

I doubt Dubas even considers the Panarin trade.

I think you’re trade make the leafs worse going forward Pesce is a good player but I don’t think I’d move Nylander for him the players the leafs need to look at moving are

Gardiner
Zaitsev
Kadri (offseason)

I think Johnsson will be the key to upgrading our blue line this year if they want to.

Changing from SmileyRielly to HappyKappy doesn't mean the trades will work. I'm still saying no and that Marleau won't waive his NMC and Nylander still won't be traded.

Dubas said he isn't trading his 2020 1st, but if Columbus will take that trade then I would be ok with it.

we are replacing Nylander on with Panarin. Marleau with Ferland. Zaitsev with Pesce. How does that make us worse?

It’s over 24 hours for this post so I tried with a different account.

Regardless of my account I don’t care about your opinion lol, I’ll wait for others.

I think there’s no way you get Panarin for what you are offering and dubas said he isn’t over paying for rentals you are assuming that ferland will sign for what you said even tho he has stated that he wants around 6 mil these trade will blow up in the leafs face only thing they come out with is cap space and Pesce.

SmileyRielly? Is that you? You have multiple personalities disorder? Lol. Sometimes I notice that things I post don’t appear until the next day too. I imagine it happens a lot.

You put up a lot here in this proposal. I really like some of these guys too. That team you posted is easily the best in the league. I mean, when you have to put Ferland as third line and Johnsson on the fourth, it immediately tells you just how deep this team you suggest really is.

In terms of real salary, Marleau is only owed $1.25M after his signing bonus is paid. He might not be traded before then. It would actually be better for both teams to wait. So a $2M retention isn’t feasible. Leafs can just retain 50%, which is maximum allowed. That’s a helluva good deal for a team that can afford the cap hit and is still an attractive enough destination Marleau would accept a trade. Whether Stars is that team, I don’t know. They are playing pretty good hockey lately and are in the playoffs. They have as good a chance as anyone I guess.

Ferland is a good player. He’s a heavy hitter, and his possession numbers are excellent, which fits the Leafs style of play very well. Think of him as a more aggressive Hyman. If Ferland is coming in as more than just a rental, and Pesce is the incoming defenseman, then this deal isn’t entirely unreasonable, though I still have a hard time seeing it happen. I think Leafs would stick to their guns and offer Kapanen for Pesce straight up, don’t worry about Zaitsev and Ferland.

I almost didn’t see the Panarin trade tucked in down below. I think you’re right. It’s not enough for Panarin. Lol.

This is great. Fantastic. I’m glad you’re back on site again. Anyone who’s been on site for a while knows you have a keen hockey sense and are an astute observer of the game. I always enjoyed your posts. If I remember correctly, you were a big supporter of Gardiner. Are you still big on him now?

HappyKappy,

DAL has just over $500k in cap space Leafs retaining 2 mil as you suggest still puts them WAY over the cap.
