Maple Leafs trade Kasperi Kapenen, Jake Gardiner and prospect Timothy Lilejgren to the Rangers for Brady Skjei and Jimmy Vessey

Well, I’m not going to lie to you NylanderMagic. I’m not sold on this one.

Skjei is a real heavy hitter, no doubt about that. And he can play over 20 minutes a night. He’s got a pretty good contract too, signed for another 5 years after this. But he’s slow. His point production continues to fall after a very good first season. And his possession metrics are horrible. Corsica has him ranked 76th LHD, which probably puts him 125+ overall. Well below Gardiner. And probably well below what Liljegren will become once he is in the league full time.

And Vesey. While I wish he had signed with the Leafs instead of Rangers as he would have been good to get for free, but he might not be worth trading for. Again, his possession metrics are terrible. And he’s a depth guy, currently playing 2nd line for NYR, he would be bottom six on Leafs for sure. Corsica has him ranked 87th for his position at LW. With only two years left until UFA status, Leafs would almost definitely have buyers remorse losing Kapanen for him.

I honestly think Leafs are giving up the two better players here, and throwing in an A-prospect. Our best RHD prospect we’ve had in over a decade. Maybe longer. Plus we are losing all that time value with Vesey having two years vs Kapanens possible 8 years. It’s too big a difference imo.

It’s a good idea though, bringing in someone to strengthen the LW. And a heavy hitter like Skjei is a player that is virtually unanimous we can use. I just don’t think these are the right guys for us though. There’s always good and bad to every proposed trade, but in this case, I think the bad outweighs the good. Too risky.

LeafsGM summed it up perfectly. I don't even know if I would trade Gardiner straight up for Skjei at this point, and you also want to throw in Kapanen and Liljgren.

I would rather get DeAngelo, if the leafs can get him for Gardiner straight up then they should jump all over it.

I think dubas would love DeAngelo in a leafs uniform. he knows him quite well.

These 5 were in order of appearance the go two guys in the Sau while he ran the show. Sandin and hollowell were his final 2 D drafted before he left. i do believe he likes to go with what he knows so DeAngelo is definetly a possibility.

Skeji is cornerstone e of their blueline going forward.

Staal is on wrong side of 30. Shattenkirk is 30 and one of the most overrated blueliners in league and certainly overpaid.

Vesey has been just ok.
