Looking at Lehner trade.

Leafs get 5th + Lehner’s salary

How the heck did they manage that one? Like seriously? Leafs took on Robin Lehner’s retained salary for a 5th. I’ll tell you what they should have done. When that Lehner contract came in from Chicago, Leafs should have kept Lehner and said “screw you”, I’m not trading him to Vegas.

We could have had Lehner folks. And it would only have cost us Dzierkals. Or whatever the heck his name is.

One good thing I did like about this trade though is that we have a sorta, kinda, valuation for a UFA starting goalie. Something to bear in mind for next year I guess.

Some how it also gives leafs an extra 1.5 to salary cap.

Vegas was not able to take on Lehner a full salary with enough room to bring back Alex tuch if he is healthy before playoffs. Martin dzerkils (unsigned) will probably never see the nhl, judging by his play and stats over seas. So in turn dubas took full advantage of knowing this and since he was not about to use the money we have left in our cap for the year. he basically took a free pick to pay out some money that the MLSE has a ton oF and give a kid a different chance, since it wasn’t happening here. He used his situation as leverage. And Lehner is not the answer in Toronto, far from it.

So the monetary value of a 5th has been established to be $1.5M. Interesting.

Given this trade, and the Marleau trade, we now know the cash cost of a 5th is $1.5M, and the cash cost of a 1st is $6.25M. That is very interesting indeed.

Remember though, that's 6.25 against the cap for the season and 1.5 is against the cap for a month and a half.
